21. Riccarton Capsule Hotel
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Architects: S.H. Yeong Architect
Unlike the many space-age pods out there, those at the Riccarton Hotel avoid unsettling sterility. Rather, the soft blue lighting within these capsules seeks to enhance aerospace design.
22. Hotel Cabana
Location: Osaka, Japan
Here at Hotel Cabana, the capsules appear to be more like commercial kitchen ovens. However, being completely soundproof, lightproof, and for males only, these stainless-steel capsules stand resolute in their function and origins.
23. Container Hotel | Capsule Hotel
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Through freight containers and concrete tubing, Container Hotel attempts to embrace the Kyosho jutaku craze, the concept of living large on a small footprint. Although the industrialized-jungle aesthetic is becoming more of a millennial trope, the recycled materials still make this hotel an eco-friendly option.
24. The Wardrobe Hostel Record
Location: Okachimachi, Japan
As Japan’s first record hostel, The Wardrobe Hostel Record can best be described as a reminiscent nostalgia for the ‘olden days’. The dark wooden tones and European sleeper-train capsules are set against the vintage jazz records- with over 1000 on the hotel’s shelves for guests to choose from.
25. The Millennials Shibuya Hotel
Location: Tokyo, Japan
The Millennials’ ‘Smart Pods’ are another example of how the capsule hotel is entering the 21st century. Similar to CityHub, the Millennials offer a personalized experience through its in-house app, whilst the capsules are also visually customized through the artistically illustrated interiors.
26. Capsule Hotel and Bookstore
Location: Qinglongwu, China
Architects: Atelier tao+c
Commissioned to redesign an old mud-and-brick house, Atelier tao+c has thoughtfully introduced beautiful architecture to the mountainous landscape. Here, the staggering, floating platforms entice guests on a meandering journey of unexpected moments throughout the hotel and bookstore, much like the surrounding mountain paths.
27. The Bed KLCC
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Enveloped by the business and shopping districts, as well as several tourist attractions, this ‘luxury’ capsule hotel provides guests with a pleasant overnight stay in their simple and spacious capsules.
28. Maja Hotel
Location: Kyoto, Japan
Architects: interior by Harri Koskinen
Maja Hotel’s eponymic conceptualization (Maja translating to ‘hut’) is realized through the recurring vernacular motif of the hut, a symbol of comfort. Whilst the street façade references machiya, traditional Japanese townhouses, the light Tamo Ash wood used in the interior spaces materializes the Scandinavian aesthetic.
29. Nadeshiko Hotel Shibuya
Location: Tokyo, Japan
This female-only capsule hotel is conveniently located and a possible alternative for any solo female travelers.
30. Skylodge
Location: Sacred Valley of Cuzco, Peru
Architects: Natura Vive team
For the intrepid explorers yearning for an adrenaline rush, Skylodge’s liberal interpretation of the capsule hotel – clinging to a Peruvian cliff- should offer some excitement. Each crystalline capsule is hand-crafted from aluminum and polycarbonate, offering compact living arrangements and once-in-a-lifetime views.
