Famous architect Rahul Mehrotra with his team RMA Architects designed The School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University which represents color and relation with functional arrangements significantly. 

While examining its structural relation of windows according to class allocation and volumetric analysis of spaces, the architectural and interior architectural design of the building indicates a modern and contemporary approach giving respect to campus surroundings and neighbor’s initial context.

In educational areas especially universities, the most interactive areas are used inside and outside the building aiming to find an efficient way of strong communication skills, and various methods during academic and social learning. In the School of Arts and Sciences Building at Ahmedabad University, the use of daylight has become a significant aspect of using daylight efficiently in working spaces

Rahul Mehrotra’s design approach demonstrates importance towards function and context of the building and fulfills the requirements of how the efficient education can be held in university; because the education is not only provided by academicians and students; it is also affected by the space definition and how people feel while communicating or working. For this concept, RMA Architects provides a comprehensive and flexible habitat for education.

RMA Architects aim for flexibility for the building and the approach is not prevailing only for interior arrangements; it also has a system of modulation formulating the façade of the building creating a system of controlling sunlight efficiently with operable sun shaders. It has a solid and void effect in terms of wood and sunshades. Operable elements also shield the inner spaces from direct sunlight, overheating, dust, and dry climate. The system of modulation in the façade is a prominent fact to show the interior relations. 

The architectural design of the School of Arts and Sciences Building is like a symbolic representation of spaces with various opportunities, interdisciplinary approaches with distinct disciplines such as biology, linguistics, humanities, etc., and this presents the metaphorical meaning of information’s diversity. For this reason, the building’s interior is connected with the exterior with an open layout of ground floor volumes providing welcoming access towards the building. 

The circulation is clear and the green courtyard supports the circulation access which defines solid and void volumes inside the building.

Spatial relations

To support interactive cognitive learning efficiently, the building has a strong spatial connection with architectural elements such as green courtyards, a flexible plan layout, and the atrium as a meeting point. The atrium creates spatial relations through other spaces by providing a long linear structure on an east-west axis and the atrium is supported by the furniture layout of seating because of being a high-density zone. 

The atrium is triple height and shows its importance with different colored walls and flooring. These architectural implementations also identify as a role of signage and help people to find a way to other spaces.

According to spatial relations of the atrium through other spaces, it serves as a leading point; access to ground floor meeting areas, laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, and lecture hall located on the west side of the building; furthermore, to administrative offices which are located in the east side of the building. In addition, the corridor has been distributed according to the transverse environment and creating a flexible layout. 

At the center of the building, the circulation axis protects from the heat of Ahmedabad’s subtropical climate. For this reason, the spatial relation of the building gives respect to climatic factors, public space facility, flexible layout, and is designed according to a unique perspective to well-oriented interior space.

Color and light aspects | School of Arts and Sciences

The coloring and lighting design of the School of Arts and Sciences building is giving the aesthetic essence of the combination of arts and sciences into one specific area. The artificial lighting elements are also distributed in corridors by defining coloring areas so that they emphasize welcoming people. Concrete walls also highlight orange and blue colored areas, and the glass windows inside the building provide visual communication between spaces. 

However, the coloring method of spaces is not the only solution to define specific areas; there are also level differences in social gathering areas and RMA Architects’ design approach enriches interpersonal relations and academic learning.

In conclusion, The School of Arts and Sciences building at Ahmedabad University is showing a significant approach for educational interior spaces with creating exterior relationships by RMA Architects. As a design style, what makes the building aesthetically pleasing is creating a unique approach by combining contextual and conceptual work. Rahul Mehrotra’s quote supports this well: “If you switch completely to the digital world, you become seduced by virtual reality.” 

For this reason, The School of Arts and Sciences building has architectural elements such as lighting, color, level differences, spatial relationship, and flexibility creates an innovative educational approach with interactive opportunities for strong academic learning skills and becomes a significant building in terms of observing prosperous educational area with the relation in the campus of Ahmedabad University, India.
