Human’s City
What makes a city? High population density, advanced infrastructure, formal administration, and economic vibrancy. When you think of a city, the first thoughts that might occur are tall buildings, crowded spaces, and a lot of traffic! A city is usually seen as an opportunity for a better quality of life, but is that really the case? With declining air quality, waste, and drainage issues, that “better quality of life” seems like just an illusion. The way cities are being planned in our country may not always help the population that lives in them. If this is the case for humans, what about the habitats that existed before these structures took over? What about species that changed their natural way of living because of the way we choose to design cities?

Invisible Habitats in the City
Over the camouflage of the flyovers, metros, and tall infrastructure, there’s a layer of habitats that cities choose to overlook or treat as invaders or outsiders. Be it the birds that seem like a nuisance in crowded places, or the street dogs that get shooed away near parks and beaches. People seem to forget that these creatures are as much a part of the city, but the city chooses to overlook them.

As the development of a city spreads, it reshapes the habitats and movement patterns of animals within. This adaptation of wildlife to urban environments, known as synurbanization, shows that species are not simply disappearing from cities; they are changing their behaviour, physiology, and movement to survive within them. Urbanisation has affected wildlife corridors, migration paths of marine life, and birds. Bees are naturally vital because they pollinate a massive share of the world’s crops and wild plants that sustain human life and other ecosystems. In an urban setting, the artificial and magnetic fields have started to confuse and disorient these pollinators. This confusion and decline of bees is not only because of artificial magnetic fields but also the result of multiple interacting factors, which include heavy pesticide exposure, the loss of natural green habitats in cities, climate disruptions, and parasites. Even at such a microscale, the species are getting affected in ways that might not be reversible.

Conflicts in the City
One might find the bee negligible in the larger urban ecosystem, but these consequences point towards a much larger concern. Urbanisation has constantly interrupted wildlife corridors that are vital for the movement and survival of species. Roads are drawn, boundaries are made, and developments are planned on paper, and this is often done without fully understanding what exists on the ground. When these corridors are disrupted, the consequences eventually reappear as what we call human-animal conflicts. An elephant crossing a road, wild boars in farms, or animals moving into areas occupied by people is often described as wildlife “entering” human territory. But perhaps the question should be “did the animal enter our territory, or did our development interrupt theirs?”

What seems to be a sudden conflict is often the result of a much earlier design decision, abandonment, competition for shared natural resources, or climate change. Accidents near wildlife corridors, cattle on main roads, and birds flocking near public areas can all be consequences of decisions made in the name of development. A road, a boundary, a development, or an infrastructure project may ignore an existing wildlife movement pattern. Things overlooked at the planning stage can eventually return as a crisis. When projects and infrastructure cut through these habitats and wildlife corridors, what starts as a line on a map reappears as human-animal conflict on the ground.

A Wild City
A city that is not only inhabited by humans but also by the rhythms, needs, and movements of other species. “In cities, animals are exposed to so-called urban stressors, human-made pressures including traffic noise, artificial light at night, limited shelter, or chemical pollution.” These often affect their social behaviours, alter the way they communicate, and how aggressive they are. Cities will keep expanding, and animals within and around them will continue to be affected in that process, which will only lead to more conflicts. Maybe instead of thinking of animals as an afterthought in the planning of a city, we need to rethink cities as habitats. This could mean designing connected green spaces, wildlife-sensitive roads and crossings, and drainage and waste systems that allow other species to move through and inhabit the city alongside us. While some cities are trying to create this understanding with animals on a small scale, the larger perspective seems untouched because humans tend to equate habitat with wilderness, and to be wild is to be far away from humans. But what if we incorporate a wild city?
