Architecture is not limited to what the eyes can see but it goes way beyond that. It is a process of understanding the space around you while also discovering within, one step at a time. It is remarkable how our ideas and perspective evolve as we enter the field of architecture. One starts observing the surrounding in detail and as a whole; rather than as a part. It is an ever-learning process once we discover the various perspectives on architecture. It is a holistic field offering us knowledge, vision, and a path to lead. Once we start exploring the different avenues of architecture, we discover the depth of it. It gives a fresh chance to understand architecture for what it is and leave behind the conventional definition of this field.

As students of architecture, we go through the continuous process of ‘learning, unlearning, and relearning.

We learn to view architecture as an ideology rather than a profession. It makes us wonder about the past, observe the present, and gives us a vision for the future. It helps us grow as a person, leaving behind all the misconceptions we have carried about architecture and life.

“I am still learning”, –Michelangelo

People and their Surroundings

Every individual has their perception of the spaces that they experience. Even without any formal education in architecture, people have been creating secure, comfortable spaces for themselves. Architecture is more of a journey than a destination. Space does not discriminate; it is what you want it to be. There are no boundaries when it comes to architecture, it is meant for everyone. It is interesting how space grows and accommodates its users and their life. A home is a cozy mud hut and also a penthouse on the 100th floor. Architecture evolves as we evolve. Every person interprets architecture in their way. It could be a magnificent skyscraper, their favorite monument, a café around the block, or just the space they share with their loved ones. That is the beauty of architecture, it allows people to exist in ways they feel happy and comfortable. Architecture has no definite rules, it flows effortlessly with time and people as we all move forward. This quality of architecture makes it an interesting concept to study and learn; architecture can teach us about life. For students and masters of the field, the line between architecture and life becomes blurred along their journey.

Emotions of a Space

Even a brick wants to be something.”, – Louis Kahn.

Having been on the journey of architecture it is interesting how we start viewing spaces as an emotion or feelings than an inanimate object. Architects often speak of the quality and the spatial experience of a space. This is a result of the power any space carries within it. Every space is initially created in our thoughts, which may or may not translate into physical reality. Nonetheless, even a mental picture of a particular space can make you go on a roller-coaster of emotions. It brings us peace to even think of our home when we are away. It gives us joy to imagine sharing laughs with your friends at your favorite café. It gives you strength when you think of the sacred spaces. You feel awestruck even by thinking of the architectural marvels. That is the power of spaces. It offered us a range of experiences and it continues to do so.

There was a time when I experienced architecture without thinking about it.” – Peter Zumthor

Understanding Architecture

It is fascinating to see the change in perspective as one enters the field of architecture. There is a deep sense of understanding even in the simplest of spaces around us. One starts observing the principles of design and relating them to the human experience. We start questioning and discovering seemingly simple concepts. For years, architects have created spaces with the awareness and needs of the users, time, and nature. All the masters of the field are modest and are lifelong learners. As architects, it is essential that one designs with the cognizance and awareness of both- the people and the space.

Soon after discovering this field, one realizes the responsibility that comes along with architecture. You can never know everything there is to architecture, but with a child-like curiosity, we can begin a lifelong quest of observing and learning. The more connected we are to our inner self; the more we can contribute to the outer world. Architecture is an excellent example of the bridge between the realm of our thoughts and the physical world. It is fascinating to see how simple ideas translate into architectural and spatial wonders. It gives us a sense of purpose to discover the effect of architecture on the human mind. It is a humbling journey to know so much yet so little about a vast concept we usually sum up as ‘architecture’. Architecture is essentially a journey within ourselves.
