In an alternate reality, what would a world without architecture look like?

How could someone ensure the safety of themselves and their families?

How could art be created in an entirely different way?

What tales would forefathers tell their children about cultural identity?

Will the skylines of every city be identical?

These significant questions alone should convince someone that the world could not exist without architecture.

Picture a world without architecture!

An unshaped land mostly covered with lush vegetation, with little space for imagination. The human race evolved from inhabiting caves to constructing shelters using thatch and wood, marking a significant stride in their quest for survival. Without these advancements, they would have been no different from other creatures, constantly battling for survival and falling victim to apex predators, along with the absence of urbanisation, limited technological advancements and different social dynamics.

Due to the rise of architecture and the fostering of creativity, humans have shaped their path to survival, distinguishing themselves from the rest of the animal kingdom. Through perseverance and imagination, people progressively constructed shelters for themselves, ultimately leading to the establishment of civilisations.

Evolution and Security.

In the early stages of humanity, people discovered that food, shelter, and clothing were essential for survival, marking the beginning of human evolution. Throughout the primitive period, beginning in the Stone Age, the first artificial shelters were created using stones and tree branches. Originally animal skin, bones and stone slabs were also used to create sturdy and comfortable homes. As time went on, people began making building blocks out of clay.

Simple housing was developed in response to the basic need for protection. Without the evolution of architecture, humans would have relied on natural barriers for protection and followed their animal instincts. Today, modern architecture has advanced in terms of building materials, construction methods, their intended uses, and ornamentation.

Architecture and Art

Art has redefined the world in various ways, one such being architecture. Architecture is a mind-boggling mix of art and science. The creation of art is the result of the passion that drives the human race. Art has been made since prehistoric times and has been advancing since then.

People now live in more civilised areas, have a stronger sense of place and culture, and have distinct identities through the evolution of architecture. During the periods of monarchy, the kings constructed enormous forts, palaces, and structures for worship that radiated strength, grandeur, and significance. This art form has created incredible monuments across the world. At the moment, architectural art is surpassing our highest hopes. It has given reasons to admire human talent and intelligence and provided them with employment opportunities.

Cultural Views

The cultural legacy is discovered in the remnants of ancient civilisations. It depicts the spectrum of emotions experienced by the deceased folks. Culture provides a person with traditions, values, knowledge and spatial relations. Architecture has given human generations access to history dating back more than 5,000 years, demonstrating the diversity of humankind. Numerous stories originate from all across the world. Monuments and buildings have fulfilled their purposes. They also represent the ideals, convictions, and goals of the communities that gave birth to them. In essence, they serve as a community’s tangible memory.

The Need for Preservation

Maintaining physical structures is only one aspect of conserving architectural history; another is honouring our ancestors and preserving our past. In addition to its fundamental historical significance, architectural preservation has significant economic implications.  Historic buildings may be retained and renovated to help communities’ local economies grow through increased tourism, employment creation, and property value enhancement. Preserving old structures rather than creating new ones helps to safeguard natural resources. For example, to lower energy use and assist the city in meeting its emissions reduction targets, the Colosseum had a solar panel restoration in 2015.

Current Architecture and Skyline

Nowadays, every major city in the world has its unique skyline, thanks to advancements in architecture. It is similar to a holographic fingerprint, setting it apart from others. TV shows, movies, news and sports programs often use a city’s skyline to establish a sense of place. The architecture, culture, and language of a city make it exclusive. Architecture has expanded vertically and horizontally and even has unique tilts!

Without architecture, today’s skylines would look very different or might not even exist. Cities vary in their definitions and population densities, and without architecture, there would only be natural horizons, temporary structures, and no visual boundaries. Skylines today would probably be very different or non-existent without architecture. Cities may differ in definition and density. There would be only natural horizons, temporary structures and no visual boundaries. Human psychology is impacted by architecture. A hostile environment and an uninhabited landscape would have made human survival difficult.

Juhani Pallasmaa cites that “a profound design process eventually makes the patron, the architect and every occasional visitor in the building, a slightly better human being.” Architecture not only shapes a region, but it also shapes individuals. It carries the heavy burden of history, riddles, and sentiments of previous generations. Outstanding architecture today reflects its evolution from the distant past. Architecture has always been an integral system of human existence, constantly adhering to its needs.
