Most of us who are in this field would agree with me about the course that it’s a long-term difficult process, but worth the knowledge you gain in these years. Architecture is not only about designing spaces it’s about understanding beyond that. The time spent in architecture school not only teaches you about the course but also various lessons about life and how to tackle it. Here is a list of things we get to learn in an architecture school.
More Practical Knowledge in Comparison to Other Courses
Being an architect or an architecture student is not only about designing but also practicing what we learn. For practical learning, we often visit construction sites to watch the process or by extension be a part of that process by hands-on practice. In addition to that, we learn scaling and proportions by making many models be it, volumetric block models, for understanding climatic conditions or detailed façade models to make a visual representation of the building. As Frank Llyod Wright once said, “talent is good, practice is better, passion is best”.
We Get More Exposure and Exploration
Since we talked about practical learning, it is really important to study any building, planning, or culture in physical presence; hence, when we get any new project there are many stages we have to achieve like site analysis and case studies. Therefore, we always visit the desired places for our understanding and to propose unique designs. With this, we get to visit many places and explore the place as well as ourselves. This gives us a New perspective towards surrounding and capturing details and creates Curiosity in us to go to the depth of learning.
Freedom to Show Your Creativity
Another factor that makes architecture more interesting and intriguing than any other profession is the independence of showing creativity, expanding our creative limits. Another important thing is design-thinking or resolving design-problems, in architecture from the beginning we are taught to look at a problem from every aspect to gather required information and then to make unique choices when coming up with a solution and to analyze the result of every decision we take toward our design problem. These skills can be applied to any type of problem to make us more efficient and effective at solving it.
Architecture Helps Us to Develop a Culture of a Place
The cultural identity of a place can be developed by the architecture of the place. It depends on various factors like climate, typology of the place, socio-cultural relationship, availability of materials, and building a relationship between humans and nature. One example can be the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world and an architectural marvel. Taj Mahal plays an important role in the cultural identity of the city of Agra. Many people visit Agra only to visit the Taj Mahal. Therefore, we can without a doubt say that architecture plays an important role to develop the culture of a place.
Historical Learning and Understanding
For some of us who feel that architecture is all about designing and rendering, this is probably going to disappoint you. The full-time course of architecture offers more than 20 subjects in a total of 10 semesters. For most of the topics, we are studying each requires a brief study of the history of that subject or the past practices, which now are replaced. History of architecture not only increases our aptitude for history but also designing and traditional methods of construction.
Time Management
Many of us would agree to the fact that before joining architecture we were awful at time management or in some cases still struggling with it. However, you can gain some time management skills while you’re in college, for your future professional-self. Of course, good time management is handy while you’re in college to avoid sleepless nights in the studio. Due to the often-intense time pressure involved in architecture school, students have a good opportunity to learn to prioritize tasks and manage their time wisely. And if you succeed in time management skills you surely can overcome any upcoming tasks.

As we talk about skill development, it’s not only about sketching and analytical thinking. As we proceed with our 5-year course it gives us many opportunities to learn and explore our inner self and talents. In addition to it, there are many software we get to learn like photoshop, illustrator, SketchUp, Revit, AutoCAD, 3Ds MAX, etc. other than that we get to expand our skill development by doing model making, pencil carving, stone carving, present ourselves, communication, writing and much more. In this profession, there is never-ending learning experiences.
Improved Communication and Presentation Skills
It’s been suggested over once already within the list, however, practice makes good design presentations, design faculty bombard you with loads of projects. Whether or not you’re explaining your ideas to dubious members, attempting to win over your professor that you just understand what you’re talking about, or defending your design in your final jury. Once you become comfy speaking or presenting before different-sized teams of individuals, that’s one thing you’ll take with you into your professional life and therefore the more frequently you’re forced to do it, the better you’ll become.
