Early Years and Advent into the Architectural Realm
Shimul Jhaveri Kadri requires no introduction when it comes to her semantic history of architectural endeavours and ventures, outlining her design philosophies and outlook on the relationship between humans and built environments. A renowned architect of contemporary times, Shimul established her firm, SJK Architects, about 30 years ago in Mumbai as a one-woman army, proliferating into a 40-person workforce, which now stands as an organisation with an exemplary client portfolio and landmark projects. Skillfully crafting mediums to address the link between community, environment, and buildings, Shimul has come a great way in furthering her firm and ideologies of harmonising with nature, making her one of the most influential architects and interior designers of India.
Shimul was born on 18 October 1962, in Mumbai, as the youngest of three children. Having fostered an early passion and fervour in architecture, she decided to pursue this field as a profession at the young age of thirteen, and went on to graduate from the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai in the year 1985. She then proceeded to obtain a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, following which Shimul briefly worked in a company in California before moving back to India. She then married Rahul Kadri, another prominent architect working for his father’s established architectural firm, I.M.K. Architects. Despite having the opportunity to join this organisation, Shimul decided to independently open her studio, the SJK Architects, spearheading a team of designers and engineers into a budding professional practice.

Design Sensibilities and Practice
At the early onset of her firm’s commencement, Shimul grounded the values of ecological consciousness and sustainability deep into the mechanism of planning and designing architectural precincts. She consciously took up architectural building projects, as against the conventional approach of settling with interior designing roles adopted by the women of the time, challenging norms and carving a niche for herself and the firm in the constructional realm. After pioneering plenty of projects ranging from residential, commercial, institutional, and cultural typologies, a common signature was set for the inception of all these buildings and spaces, binding them as of a singular origin, though each flaunted varied characteristics and styles. Held together by the threads of sun, wind, and nature to weave tapestries of the built, her practice often fuses contemporary innovations and evolving advancements with light and shadows.
With utmost respect for Indian traditions, regional history, and spiritual nuances, Shimul and her firm’s works often reflect and resonate the ethos and values of the geography, culture, and environment. Delving deep into the approach and routine of conceptualising designs, the firm follows a set of philosophies. The first being ‘context,’ with two sets of implied meanings, one deriving strategies from the sun, wind, and rain, while the other alludes to the wisdom of human history and cultural connotations of the region. The second pays tribute to the craftsmanship and skill sets developed with respect to the materials and tools, adding a flavour of local identity and enhanced aesthetic value. Last but not least is the virtue of staying contemporary by adopting evolving technologies, innovations, and thoughts of the present times. While it is imperative to stay rooted to the cultural advocacies of the neighbourhood, it is equally dire to incorporate qualities that accentuate its relevance in the current and future context.
Popular Projects and Portfolios
Shimul, through her insights, foresight, and collective vision of the firm, has directed several projects which have gained both national and international acclaim. The firm’s diverse portfolio includes buildings and projects coming under the categories of hospitality, masterplan, cultural, retail, adaptive reuse designs, interior designing, and workplace. Some of her popular projects are as follows:
- The Dasavatara Hotel – Nestled amidst the lush green envelope of the Sapthagiri Hills, is a homage to the divinity and cultural context of the pilgrimage centre, Tirupathi, in Andhra Pradesh. Built on an expanse of 13,150 square metres of land, this hotel is steeped in a sense of contemporary and rooted facets, featuring water bodies reflecting the harmony of the built and natural, elevating the user-experience with immersive spaces, usage of local materials and techniques, and unique, meaningful forms. With promenades, an overlaying residential quarters, and the ‘Lotus Restaurant,’ all arranged in a hierarchal fashion against the backdrop of the mountains, provides a vision of serenity and luxury.
- Mahindra Automobile Design Studio – Completed in 2020, this workspace in Mumbai conveys industrial expressions and glamour through the lens of architecture, combining workshops, offices, display spaces, and recreational facilities. Bringing about an interplay of light and shadow, this facility cultivates an environment conducive to automobile design and synthesis for one of the leading companies, Mahindra and Mahindra. Formulated as a series of five refurbished sheds along the lines of adaptive reuse, these spaces once again filled with life through strengthening, introduction of mezzanine floors and an interesting material palette. Spaces are crafted with attention to detail and image of the client’s work base, reinforcing their brand and reiterating their values.

In the Contemporary Sense
Today, SJK Architects, under the leadership of Shimul Jhaveri Kadri, has evolved to include three more phenomenal architects at the helm, namely Ar. Vaishali Shankar, Ar. Sarika Shetty and Ar. Roshni, reinstilling Shimul and the firm’s faith in the collective. This partnership has served as an impetus for the organisation’s continued growth trend and tends to serve as an exceptional example for teamwork and dedication. Shimul has truly become an icon in the ever-transforming landscape of Indian architecture, setting benchmarks and paving new directions for women in the field. Shimul, as an unwavering source of inspiration, was awarded the coveted Prix Versailles Award in 2016 and the World Architecture Festival Award in 2012, among other national and international accolades. She has also been featured as the most renowned architect and interior designer in AD’s top 100 and 50 lists. Through years of achieving milestones and establishing herself as a leading architect of today’s times, Shimul has defined architecture as it should be interpreted culturally, ethically, ecologically, and in terms of user-centric solutions.
