The buildings and monuments we see around us give us a reflection of the styles, values, and beliefs that they carry. From the past to the present, the changes in architectural forms and styles in the context of Nepal and other parts of the world are evolving. The narrative that architecture carries of a particular city is what shapes it as a whole.  From the context of availability, use, and practice, the transformation over time has influenced many ways. Globalization works as a connecting medium of local architecture to the whole world and shapes it through the values, identity, and media.

Local Context

Local Communities can benefit from the standardization of architectural styles because these newer modern structures are built keeping smart technology in consideration, and it is easier to integrate technology when compared to traditional structures. In Japanese architecture, for instance, the use of wood reflects a deep cultural attachment to nature and a respect for the inherent properties of the material. The vernacular architecture flourished there, in alignment with their principle to respect nature. The Architectural style shaped the city like Tokyo, which now identifies as a place where nature and modernism both act as a medium to combine it with the world.

The city is lined with various skyscrapers with the digitalization and use of technology at its peak, but the humbleness through the peak of Mt. Fuji gives it a space to bind it both through the styles. The use of technology and making the buildings consider their natural value gives the best way to reflect and shape the city’s identity.

Global Influence

In architecture, globalization and influence from the grassroots level to the high levels are adapting the overall scenario. The global context tells us about the context and change that is happening in the world of architecture. The spread in design of modernism with glass-steel structure from the USA to Dubai, creating a building that belongs everywhere through prioritizing the global community. Global Influence helps in showing the city’s identity to the world. Through various landmarks that are located across various cities in the world, we can identify it and define the global Image. For instance, the Eiffel Tower acts as a magnet to attract tourists, which helps in adding value to the city. Globalized architecture and the international style have flourished in “modern buildings”, which are believed to be short-lived by several studies for a couple of reasons.

Architecture as a connecting factor

Architecture acts as a bridge in local identities with the global influences, with inclusion of reference to the present, the past, and the future. The community connector across the social, economic, and technological aspects helps in identities and people’s experiences. The architecture ensures the balance in global techniques through connecting the culture, economy, technology, and needs of humans. The communities that play a role in creating the new culture, the differences that characterize them, collaborate and integrate. It requires us humans to think systematically about the impact of architectural indications, not just in terms of aesthetics or functionality, but also in terms of their social and cultural implications.

Challenges

The interconnection of local and global context interplays various challenges. From the rapid urbanization to the costs, including the lack of soul. The global architectural context has diversity. The one form and values that a city or community holds have their own uniqueness and contextual definitions. The global trends of trends often overshadow the vernacular forms, and that can hinder the reflections in the styles and shape of the city. The unusual access to data can lead to disparity, leaving marginalized people excluded from the benefits.

Opportunities

The applicability and functionality hold a position in describing it, and the flow helps in economic growth, global recognition, and boosting the business. The connection with diverse communities and the shared spaces helps in the growth of the community. The information through the various urban approaches with human-centric design can lead to user-applicable planning and analysis. The opportunities for the architect and urban planners can help them in shaping the city, and the knowledge through different styles reflects and shapes the city’s Identity in the world.

Architecture defines both the local heritage and global identities as a boon and shapes the cities as identities that have the capability to design the space with functionality, sustainability, and growth. The identity of various architectural cities like Tokyo and Paris helps in various opportunities, as well as fostering local pride. Balancing in various forms, landscapes locally and globally have the sensitivity to create, inspire, and manage the evolving world.
