French Memorial
The memorial is located in Mohyal Park at sector 40 of Gurgaon, built in memory of Major Jean Etienne of Bordeaux France. The major was an army officer in Begum Samru’s army for thirty-five years during her reign in the 1800s. This 200-year-old square-shaped memorial is a perfect remnant of Colo
nial and late-Mughal architecture. The tomb consists of two parts, a 15-foot tall vertical structure made of brick and limestone standing over a 6-foot tall platform and another horizontally lying rectangular structure serving as a sepulcher. The decoration on the four corners of the vertical structure is created with the help of lime on the white wall which attracts visitors and definitely fascinates Architects.

The structure was built in 1920 by then Deputy Commissioner F.L Brayne, in memory of his late son John Goble Brayne. This well-designed colonial memorial hall is situated in the civil lines of the area and is now served by the government administration. The Ghaus baoli is a step well built in 18th century AD by Ghaus Ali Shah during the reign of Mughal emperor Farrukh Siyar. The baoli gives a sense of a Turkish hammam with its surrounding arches and columns made of stones, lime plaster, and bricks. The structure is not just a step well but it also uses to serve as a shelter for relaxation and recreation on its upper storey giving out a sense of a modern-day spa. The monument has already gained a lot of popularity for its story of being used as a bathing place for the ladies residing in the Sheesh Shah’s Mahal during the reign of the Farrukh Shah.
