Why Storytelling?

Stories have always been captivating, haven’t they? We grew up avidly waiting to be told one every night before we could float away in our own versions of those narrations. Storytelling has forever been around, the first of which is evident in the caves of Lascaux in the form of drawings and carvings by which we know that humans have always grasped information in the form of stories, due to its structure – an opening, a middle, and a conclusion. This helps engage different regions of our brains, making it easier to comprehend information. When one recounts a story, the listener is able to follow through the scenes due to Neural coupling, a process in which a synchrony exists between the brain activities of the storyteller and the listeners.

The success of book series like Harry Potter or shows like The Game of Thrones is proof that anything with an engaging storyline garners the interest of the masses. In reality, people have never had the ability to perform magic or fly on a broomstick, yet we were hooked on the books and lost in an imaginary world. That’s the power of storytelling. This storytelling has now become the foundation on which Modern design consultants conjure meaningful designs and experiences.

Design has layers

There has always been a prejudice towards designing; people often relate it to making things “look good”, for example, in the design of a wedding card, people usually think it’s about adding flashy colours, using different textures of papers, and including intricate details in the hopes of making it grand. Even the design of a piece of jewellery on a superficial level seems to be only about the metal or gems used, or about how much it weighs and how sparkly it looks, if it charms the buyer, but design was never just about these qualities; its intent has continually been to communicate a story to the viewer.

A story that could evoke emotions and relay the message crafted by the bride and the groom, an emotion or symbol personalized in the form of something tangible, such as jewellery. Even in the world of digital design, though aesthetics has an immediate appeal to the eyes, what retains that attention is the story that the design delivers to the users. These stories build trust and promote a connection with the design, allowing for a higher chance of its implementation. Many platforms like Spotify and Duolingo use this aspect in the design of their user interface, personalizing the experience for each individual, thereby fostering an additive relationship leading to high user engagement.

Storytelling in Branding

Consumers choose one brand over another purely based on how much they can relate to the brand, its ideologies, and what it stands for. This is as important as the quality and price of the product or service set by the brand. When a modern design consultant chooses to put out the story of the brand it represents – inception of the brand, background of the founders, and the research or experiments that lead to the development of the products, it creates transparency, and stronger brand recognition, simulating the consumers to experience the journey as their own. This bond strengthens the affinity towards that particular brand and helps the brand accumulate a constant number of loyal customers.

Storytelling in Architecture

In architecture, design is formulated on the basis of many criteria like the location, materials, climate and much more, these are then represented in the form of drafted plans and 3D renders and videos, but what stays with the client or what the client is most likely to decipher and relate to is the narration, the theme which the architect uses to tie all these together like the flowers in a garland. Through the years in practice, modern design consultants have pinned down this technique and have successfully advised it as a marketing tool, increasing their probability of client satisfaction, resulting in a greater inflow of clients and increased financial growth.

Apart from the reason for its neural synchrony, the use of a plot or story has also been due to its ability to propel the profits of designers and companies. We see this trend extend to social media as well, most popularly on YouTube and Instagram, where influencers incorporate their own stories and pique users’ attention towards products and services. Their stories, or rather the stories they portray, trigger a wave of emotions in the viewers, compelling them to make purchases.

From words to scenes, storytelling comes across as the simplest manner to entice people; it bridges the gap between concept and understanding, and it mimics one’s journey in another’s mind. As the process of designing evolves in terms of techniques and technology, the most important hallmark of a brand or firm shall remain its authenticity and its razor-sharp ability to propagate its motto in the form of stories to the minds and hearts of the user.
