The world is architecture and architecture is the world. It is a reality that often gets overlooked in the growing hustle and bustle of cities today. The true essence and the intricacies of architecture often get neglected. Imagine a world with no built forms and plains of land to long distances, droughts and no trace of form, material and design. No one would ever want to live in such a world. Imagining such scenarios makes us appreciate architecture and design even more.

Any individual who pursues the noble path of being an architect has to ride through the world of colours, shapes, 2D and 3D forms and whatnot. They begin to imagine entering a world of architecture that has just come out of an animated movie. An abstract world. However, they are far away from reality.

Students enrolled in an architecture college go through a roller coaster ride throughout their education years where architecture surprises them at every moment. When reality sets in, students experience a transition from a curious wonderland to a technical universe where they have to deal with minute details of drawings taxation systems, to developing business acumen and handling sites. The transition is just like travelling between two parallel worlds. One, fueled by imagination and artistic expression. The other is grounded in the practicalities of the built world. But it is the journey that shapes young architects, transforming and enabling them to turn dreams into reality and making them builders of structures and experiences.

The transition consists of navigating the world of sketches to brick-and-mortar creations. The world of how building materials such as brick, concrete and wood combine to create functional spaces. Adding to the hustle are the complex software and digital models that breathe life into the designs. Most importantly, they develop the ability to translate emotions and experiences into physical structures, becoming not just builders of spaces, but creators of human encounters.

Significance of Architecture in History Books

The impact of architecture on contemporary life traces back to historical dates when architecture reflected the values, aspirations and progress of civilisations. From the majestic pyramids of Egypt to the grandeur of Gothic cathedrals, architectural marvels have been symbolic of societal achievements, religious beliefs, and cultural identity. Layouts of cities and structures in ancient civilisations served dual purposes of practical functionality and profound symbolism. For example, The Agora in Greece was more than just a marketplace in ancient Greek society. It served the purpose of public gatherings and largely reflected the democratic principles that Greek philosophers imparted to the civilisation. Another beautiful example of a landmark symbolising human values is the Taj Mahal of India. The intricate carvings and craftsmanship on the walls of the building symbolise the eternal love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. These contrasting landmarks offer unique windows into their respective cultures: one a testament to civic engagement, the other a celebration of enduring love.

Social Interaction Element

The spaces that architects design significantly influence human behaviour and social interaction. Public spaces such as parks, plazas and gathering areas play a significant role in nurturing community engagement. Well-designed public spaces encourage social interactions, cultural exchange and a sense of belonging. They become venues for civic events, celebrations, and communal activities, strengthening the social fabric of a community. On the other hand, poorly designed or neglected public spaces can contribute to social isolation and a decline in community cohesion.

Emotional Influence of Architecture on Daily Lives

The spaces inhabited by people influence their moods productivity levels and overall sense of happiness. For example, a well-designed and well-constructed home provides a strong sense of comfort, security and belonging. On the other hand, poorly designed spaces can induce stress and unease.

Several architectural design concepts such as biophilic design, and sustainable design have been on the rise in recent years primarily due to the exposure to nature it brings to the inhabitants. Cities are blooming with greenery, basking in natural light, and embracing open spaces – not merely for aesthetics, but for the well-being they bring. Scientific studies show these elements positively impact mental health, reduce stress, and even boost cognitive function. Recognising the benefits, architects and urban planners are reimagining the built environments, fostering a harmonious connection between humans and nature.

Urban Planning and Livability

Urban planners collaborate closely with architects to craft cities that blend aesthetics and visual appeal with functionality and livability. Accessibility, efficient public transportation, expansive green spaces, and integrated mixed-use developments collectively enhance urban areas’ overall quality of life. Thoughtfully designed cities prioritize the well-being of their residents, promoting inclusivity and accessibility. On the other hand, inadequately planned cities with congestion, insufficient green spaces, and subpar infrastructure contribute to a diminished quality of life and pose societal challenges.

The dynamic force that architecture commands goes beyond the physical attributes of structures; it is a fusion of art, history, functionality, and human experience. Surrounded continuously by architecture guarantees a profound impact on people’s lives and allows them to appreciate the intricate dance between imagination and reality, turning dreams into tangible, lived experiences.
