“ Architecture is the thoughtful creation of a space.” Louis Kahn
The statement reflects the essence of architecture as an art that goes beyond just constructing buildings, whereas it is more about a constant and conscious effort to create an environment that evokes emotions, holds meaning, and serves a purpose.
When studying or practising architecture one can closely observe how architecture is so much related to human life and the spaces they inhabit. Right from ancient civilization to the contemporary world, it could be understood how architecture promotes development, creativity, and vision. The nomads being the first to exist always looked for temporary sources of food and shelter. Being adaptive to nature their shelter was moreover made of leaves, branches, and animal skin, which wasn’t sufficient to protect them from the natural elements. With time understanding the need for a controlled environment that provides a sense of protection and security architecture governed the shape, structure, and functionality of a shelter. This provided us with excellent examples of city planning, community spaces like great baths, and drainage systems from the ancient remains. All these spaces got their place in architectural history as they promoted the social and cultural development of humans creating an emotional connection to the spaces. Ultimately, architecture acts as a bridging element between the natural world and the built environment, offering a controlled setting that shields from external elements helping in shaping psychological, social, and cultural lives.
In today’s contemporary world which focuses more on social connectivity and creative expressions, meaningful spaces to support the same need to be built with better architectural understanding. This understanding includes perceiving a space and reflecting the exact character, to make it adaptive and functional as per its use. Without such spaces, the social structure could be weakened, and it could reduce opportunities for better education, and community support. Architecture is considered to give a physical identity to a building, without which cultural landmarks and heritage would have been lost affecting the community’s sense of identity and community. Apart from aesthetics, building identity talks about encompassing its function, cultural significance, and the impact it has on those who interact with it.
The basic needs of humans rely on shelter, sustenance, and education in which architecture plays a pivotal role. It also enhances the everyday experiences and fosters the development of an individual and the communities. Human health and hygiene being the most concerned topic is governed by developing a proper sanitation system to prevent poor hygiene and higher prevalence of disease. Building and architecture are also important to promote productivity through creating spaces like offices, factories, or farms which helps in economic growth and stability.
All these factors evidentially speak to how much architecture is important and why it is important. Looking at it as a way of interacting, expressing, and connecting the art of designing a building known as architecture could be understood.
