Andra Matin is a well-known architect from Indonesia who became a pioneer in the founding of Young Architects of Indonesia. The work was so amazing that in one of its installations entitled Elevation was awarded a Special Mention Award at the 16th Venice Biennale.

In his career, he founded an architectural firm that produces works such as offices, worship rooms, cultural buildings, houses, landscaping, and so on.

As an architect, Andra Matin is very proud of Indonesia’s material localization. He included local materials in each of his designs. Moreover, his way of thinking is also uncommon to how architecture was created and developed undoubtedly.

1. Dia.Lo.Gue

This is the first milestone in the history of Andra Matin’s career. Where Le-Bo Ye asked Matin to do renovations in his office with a low budget. Then, Andra Matin created an amazingly simplistic concept. He created a sequence of spaces that combines galleries, cafes, communal spaces, and offices. In the end, the project succeeded in the IAI Award, a competition organized by the Indonesian Architects Association.

2. Potato Head

Potato Head Beach Club is located in Bali, Indonesia. This building is a resort area with its pool and bars. Its architectural uniqueness radiates with its facade which consists of 6600 “krepyak” windows, traditional Indonesian windows. Amazingly, the window was collected from all over Indonesia. Moreover, the concept of this building is to maximize the view and experience of space with natural light.

3. Blimbingsari Airport

This airport is located in Banyuwangi. Stands on 9,386 sqm designed by Matin with properly designed. The design of this airport is to realize a very efficient passive design. Andra Matin provides passive temperature control in the entrance, overhang, and landscape areas with ventilation and sun shading. Then, the roof combines with a hipped green roof that allows direct entry of sunlight.

4. Tubaba Mosque – Sessat Agung

Tubaba Mosque is located in Lampung, Indonesia. This mosque fuses urban planning and originality of the district as a whole. It has a tower-shaped symbolizes a vertical relationship between a man and God. Furthermore, the horizontal element symbolizes an equal relationship between a man and another human. The massive form reflects sacred and private activities. Then, to implement Lampung’s traditional story, Tubaba has nine peaks roof which symbolizes “the siger”, traditional crown of Lampung. Moreover, the artificial pond uses to cool down the area and reflect space.

5. AM Residence

To create a relationship between the house and its natural environment, Matin provides vegetation as an important element in this building. Matin also applies concrete and wood materials to reduce complicated maintenance. Then, there is a pool that is also used to cool the house.

6. Tanah Teduh

Tanah Teduh is a collaborative project that attracts 10 extraordinary architects in Indonesia. They designed a residence with a beautiful and shady concept. Although designed by 10 architects, Tanah Teduh can offer a strong and unprecedented character from each of its architects. Tanah Teduh’s design is very natural and charms combine with vegetation and water. Thus, creating a residential atmosphere close to nature with a cozy building concept.

7. I & L Residence

This house is designed as natural as possible to be close to nature. Therefore, many palm trees were found around the building. That is because the previous homeowner lives in an apartment and wants to feel the house is really above the ground. Then, to maintain the contextual site environment, Matin applies vegetation to every corner of the house supported by unfinished concrete columns and blocks.

8. Salihara Community

This building was built in 2008 to provide public space for the Salihara Community. The mass of the building stretches from west to east which can reflect each layer and the material used. The function of this building is a communal space for Salihara Community, an organization of regular music and theater.

9. The Mahitala

This ten-story office building was designed with a facade with neatly arranged windows. Moreover, this building uses concrete as the main material and is combined with a black steel structure.  Then, with an industrial concept, this building creates a sleek building and easy maintenance.

10. Javaplant Office

Javaplant Office is an office that is designed with a vernacular and contemporary concept. This building is also used as a herbal drink laboratory. Moreover, Javaplant office implements local materials around the site to build this building. Thus, the use of local materials is an efficient solution in the cost budget. Architecturally, this office has a mountainous background that blends with the building. Religious Space.

11. Riverside Mosque

Landed right next to a river, the mosque has three main zones. This mosque has an open space area that extends over the entrance to the river. Then, users are welcomed with the mosque itself. This mosque tries to bring the river as a part of its design, a struggle to produce our affection and recognition for nature, as it is an extraordinary piece of our entities.

12. Chapel in Hainan

The Hainan Chapel was designed as enormous as the entire building. Users may come encompassing the building before discovering the entry of the chapel. The walk constitutes a clear tone of the space with a cleansing spectacle before accessing a pure space. Moreover, the chapel creates a different exterior and an interesting enclosing in its interior. Not only that. The chapel creates two main gates that welcome the users and give them access to the natural water-scape outside in its landscape.

13. Conrad Chapel

The Conrad Chapel uses rectangular shapes to connect the relationship between humans and their creators. The interior is distinguished between women and men who are inseparable. Then, the ‘groom’ wall is made of steel structure, supported by travertine marble. Then, the lighter wall retains half of it for the saying, “Follow every great man, there is a great woman.”

14. Cikal School

Cikal School stands in 8,000 sqm at the side of a highway. It has an orange-tinted concrete building that attains on with trees and natural shading. The school has a bounded view of the existing trees, granting a natural appearance to the classrooms. The multipurpose hall rises in the front of the site, as properly as executive parties that are more adjacent to the way to make a block from the traffic noise. Cikal is an excellent place to study because its design adheres to kids and their spatial development with the various levels of topography. Moreover, the building height is also very whimsical and bizarre for the kids.

15. AD Premiere

AD Premier was designed to become a new landmark for its area and also as a useful, producing area that consoles in its site. The main office tower can be applied as a green area on the ground floor through a simplistic rectangular configuration. Then, the level of the podium serves as an island in the center of a reflection pond to produce a peaceful ambiance. Furthermore, the exterior expresses the arrangement of thick layers to keep the harsh sun away from the interior.

Based on the explanation of each project carried out by Andra Matin, it can be concluded that Matin has a unique architectural character. Andra Matin has architectural principles such as doing energy saving with pleasing and memorable concepts. Matin has the goal to create an experience of the space in each of his works. In addition, he always uses local material from the site and is packaged in a simple but elegant way. Typically, Andra matin always wants to make a space configuration that is unpredictable and full of mystery.
