With the rising population in India, and due to migrating people from rural to urban areas in vague of finding the opportunities of better living, food, shelter, and for the daily wages, they end up living in the most hazel conditions in the metropolitan cities. They are left with living in the unhealthiest conditions. For living and for raising their family and children, they wander for the daily wage occupations in the city. 

Some of the most densely populated slums in India which include the maximum percentage of poor in the country are listed below.  

1. Dharavi Slum, Mumbai | Metropolitan cities

Dharavi Slum is considered to be the world’s most densely populated of about 1,000,000 and Asia’s largest slums with an area of just over 2.1 square kilometers. With the expulsion from the peninsular city of factories and residences and also the migration of rural people to the urban city of Mumbai during the colonial period, this locality happened to be set at that time in 1884.

2. Nochikuppam Slum, Chennai 

Nochikuppam area is all about the story of the lives of urban slum residents which houses more than thousands of families along the Marina Loop road opposite to the Bay of Bengal. This area is shared by the two sets of people who do the same work. One who lives in the permanent houses and the other who lives in the tents, all belonging to the fishing occupation.

3. Rajendra Nagar Slum Bangalore | Metropolitan cities

It is said that around 20% of the garden city, Bangalore’s population resides in slums. One among these slums is the Rajendra Nagar slum where people are not ready to shift under the flyover in the temporary shelters, finding it risky. But as per the comments by the people of Bangalore, these slum residents have been rehabilitated.

4. Bhalswa Slum, Delhi

Behind the beautiful landscaping done over the Jahangiri Puri Garbage Mountains, lies the ugly truth of the urban slum of Delhi. The residences are migrants from nearby villages. With the dream of better living in the urban, these villagers with no home and no work end up settling in the area of slum.

5. Basanti Slum, Kolkata | Metropolitan cities

With the narrow roads and the criss-cross arrangement of electric wires running everywhere in the slums of Basanti in Kolkata is the most populated slum in the city. With the development of the city, this slum is affecting its urbanisation.

6. Indiramma Nagar, Hyderabad

About 6, 24,689 people live in the slums of Indiramma Nagar in Hyderabad. In this ‘city of Nizam,’ there are about 100 identified slums and about 25 unidentified slums in Hyderabad where residents live in very unstable conditions all way from years in the worst hygiene and sanitation conditions.

7. Mehbullahpur Slum, Lucknow

In this city of Nawabs, most of the people who are poor live in slums who have migrated from the nearby district to wander for the daily wages, living, and food but they end up living in awful living conditions. The population in this locality is increasing at a faster rate in this urban slum as a whole.

8. Saroj Nagar Slum, Nagpur | Metropolitan cities

In this prime land of about 1600 hectares, approximately 40% of the population of Nagpur is assumed to live in slums. In this orange city, Saroj Nagar slum is one among the many in the city. It makes one of the largest slums in Maharashtra after Dharavi.

 9. Parivartan Slum, Ahmadabad

This Parivartan slum along the riverside slums in Ahmadabad is about 40 years old. This locality is home to many poor people living on the river banks. 

10. Satnami Nagar Slum, Bhopal | Metropolitan cities

In the city of lakes, this Satnami Nagar in Bhopal is one of the oldest slums. People of Bhopal, who live on the street and are poor, these slums are sheltering many poor populations of Bhopal.
