The Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu festival, unfolds in a 12-year cycle across four sacred cities: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. The 2019 Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marked a historical moment, witnessing the largest peaceful human gathering ever recorded, with 110 million pilgrims expected over 49 days. On the most auspicious day, over 15 million took a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, affirming the festival’s immense spiritual significance.

Preparing for the 2025 Maha Kumbh

The city of Prayagraj, though steeped in history and spiritual significance, faces a unique challenge in organizing the Kumbh Mela each time. But how does Prayagraj, a city not known for advanced infrastructure or grand urban planning, manage to host such a monumental event? How do officials and the community come together to orchestrate an event of this scale, year after year? As the city prepares for the 2025 mega event, set to begin on January 13th, the challenge lies in building a temporary yet efficient city that can accommodate millions, uphold sacred traditions, and ensure safety and accessibility

With riverfronts at the heart of this transformation, how will the city design spaces that honour tradition while accommodating the unprecedented scale of the gathering? Can a city with limited resources truly meet the demands of such an extraordinary occasion? The answers are still unfolding as Prayagraj gets ready for the next chapter in this age-old saga.

Sacred Waters: The Heart of the Kumbh Mela

Millions of pilgrims from around the world, families, the elderly, and even the disabled, undertake an arduous journey, walking miles and enduring the chaos, driven by a singular purpose: to take a holy dip in the sacred waters. This act of ritual bathing, or snan, is believed to cleanse sins and bestow spiritual merit, making it the most revered practice of the Kumbh Mela. This act of ritual bathing, or snan, is believed to cleanse sins and bestow spiritual merit, making it the most revered practice of the mela. The origins of this sacred tradition trace back to Hindu mythology, where drops of divine nectar from the kumbh (pot), churned during the Samudra Manthan by the devas and asuras, are believed to have fallen at four sites: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain.

Prayagraj’s unique geography amplifies its spiritual significance. The city rests at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, a meeting point known as the Triveni Sangam. Considered the holiest of river unions, this sacred juncture transforms into the heart of the Kumbh Mela. Here, grand processions of saints, sadhus, and devotees march toward the river with ceremonial pomp, chanting hymns and performing rituals. The journey culminates at the ghats, where pilgrims offer prayers, sing devotional songs, and immerse themselves in the divine waters.

Challenges in Mela Management

The Kumbh Mela presents numerous challenges that must be addressed for its successful execution. Managing the massive influx of pilgrims requires efficient coordination of temporary facilities like resting areas, food stalls, and public washrooms. Ensuring safety amid overcrowding, excessive noise, and spontaneous activities is also critical.

Providing adequate accommodation and transportation for millions of attendees is a logistical struggle at the city level. Limited infrastructure and narrow roads further complicate the movement of people and access to essential services. Maintaining order amidst the chaos is essential to ensure smooth functioning during the event.

Ritual bathing and offerings contribute to water contamination, increased waste, and reduced oxygen levels, harming aquatic life and disrupting the ecosystem. Balancing spiritual needs with environmental preservation is crucial for sustainable management of the mela.

Riverfront Development for Kumbh Mela 2025: A Multi-Level Planning Approach

At the national level, the Prime Minister launched large-scale riverfront projects with a ₹5,435 crore budget. These projects focus on reinforced ghats, riverbank stabilization, and enhancing accessibility while protecting the Ganga’s ecological integrity. These efforts aim to improve the experience for millions of devotees while ensuring long-term sustainability.

On the state level, the Yogi Adityanath-led government is developing a 15.25 km riverfront, inspired by Mumbai’s Marine Drive, stretching from Dashashwamedh Ghat to Phaphamau. With an investment of ₹213 crore, these developments aim to ease congestion, create employment opportunities, and enrich the pilgrim experience through scenic views, dining options, and recreational spaces.

At the environmental level, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has implemented a strategic plan to temporarily shut down industrial units that discharge waste into the Ganga or its catchment area. This initiative is crucial for ensuring that untreated water does not pollute the Ganga during the Mela, aligning with the goal of a “Swachh and Nirmal Ganga.”

Comprehensive Urban Design for Kumbh Mela 2025

Other than riverfront development, planning for Kumbh Mela 2025 also addresses various urban design challenges such as sanitation, mobility, transport, and surveillance. Significant steps include improving road connectivity, building pedestrian pathways, and constructing overbridges to ease traffic flow. Enhanced waste management systems and sewage treatment plants are being installed to maintain cleanliness. Digital surveillance and crowd control technologies are also being incorporated to ensure safety. These measures focus on ensuring a smooth, organized, and safe experience for the millions of pilgrims.
