In the bustling city of Kolkata is a multi-disciplinary architecture studio, Abin Design Studio, making its mark stronger through the testament of time. Ar. Abin Choudhury is an acclaimed architect and the founder of Abin Design Studio. Holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in 1998 and further pursued industrial design from Doms Academy, Milan. Holding a diverse portfolio of numerous prestigious projects across residential, commercial, and public spaces, he has made a significant impact on modern architecture in India. In addition, the studio has secured a position in the category of 100 Most Influential Architects and Interior designers 2021 in the recent past.

The branding of Abin Design Studio stands at the intersection of creativity, precision, and cultural consciousness. The studio’s core philosophy revolves around the idea of creating spaces that go beyond mere functionality—they aim to evoke emotions and foster a sense of connection with the environment. Every project undertaken by the studio reflects a commitment to thoughtful design that is rooted in understanding the local context, responding to environmental challenges, and providing long-lasting value.

Ar. Abin Choudhury’s design philosophy is deeply inspired by his belief that architecture should be an immersive experience. His work is not just about creating beautiful structures but about forging lasting connections between the built and natural environments. The studio often uses locally sourced materials and integrates elements that reflect the cultural essence of the region while still embracing modern design trends. This balanced fusion has become a hallmark of the studio’s identity, which is reflected in its branding—clean, contemporary, and sophisticated, yet deeply connected to the roots of Indian architecture.

Here are a few architecture and interior design projects under Abin Design Studio that no architecture enthusiast would miss:

From residential spaces to commercial establishments, urban planning projects to institutional buildings, the studio has created a diverse range of architectural works that cater to different contexts and needs. However, despite this diversity, all of the studio’s projects maintain a distinct and easily recognizable identity—characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and a deep respect for the surrounding environment.

Typology: Residential

The site is part of a developed housing community in the outskirts of Bangalore. The city has very pleasant weather, almost around the year, which we tried to bring into the home through natural light and ventilation. Its surroundings being rather unremarkable, the USP of the house needed to, thus, come from the house itself. The massing of the building was important, and simplicity was essential. A courtyard was planned as the focal point of the house and we built all other spaces around it. A taller mass was planned south of the courtyard to ensure a shaded and accessible open space. The Northern side of the courtyard had a slightly shorter mass with an elongated slab exposed by balconies and terraces. This balance of the two masses created a simple, modern, interesting form—in line with our philosophy for the home. The two masses on either side of the court are connected with just a narrow passage. This sky-lit passage is completely glazed on one side and has a wall of vertical fins on the other. It boasts views on either side, providing uninterrupted continuity of the greens and water bodies through this passage into the house, interweaving the indoor spaces with the landscape continuously.

Adisaptagram Workshop

Typology: Industrial Architecture

Conceived with the intent of tapping the undiscovered potential of talented people in peri-urban areas, the workshop proves to be a commercially viable endeavor that supports ADS’s professional practice while being mutually beneficial to the locals who find job opportunities and financial stability. The project is a celebration of the love, labor, and effort that is put into the realization of various ADS structures. It led to the idea of setting up a workshop and material research unit which would serve as a backbone for explorative and execution works taken up by Abin Design Studio. It was, in essence, a co-beneficial system that would provide support to the practice as well as stable employment to improve the livelihood of locals. The proposed workshop extension is programmatically conceived to allow craftsmen and stakeholders to explore and collaborate on building techniques related to carpentry, metalwork, building finishes, material, etc in a singular space along with exhibition spaces and workspaces for supervisors.

The projections along the facade are designed as sleek boxes made using two layers of MS plates for heat insulation. These are opened at the top with operable louvers, in a north-facing direction for cross ventilation. The space between these consecutive ‘boxes’ is covered in sloping G.I sheets resting on M.S rafters, as the area receives heavy rainfall. The structure is thus worked out to allow ease in construction while indulging ephemeral functions. Overall, the idea is to break the typology of a factory-like space and establish a language that allows the inclusion of stakeholders within the craftsmen’s space using an architectural framework that develops a strong tectonic relationship with the context.
