Effective Layout: Dotcom Space, Tokyo, Japan

The importance of a compact yet functional layout is seen in the design of Dotcom Space, a sleek café located in Tokyo, Japan. Embracing the principles of Japanese minimalism, this café is situated on a basement level and covers 189.52 square metres. Designed by Keiji Ashizawa Design, a Tokyo-based architectural firm, the space includes a terrace, café, and event area that can accommodate up to 64 guests. 

The layout incorporates clear zoning with strategically placed ordering stations, a coffee counter, and a restroom and meeting room at the rear end, which enhances the flow of activities and minimises disruption. This efficient use of space, including the central placement of the counter and the strategic positioning of the meeting room and restroom, helps create an open, inviting atmosphere that allows smooth customer experiences.

Warmth Through Colour: Chai Guys Portobello

Colour is one of the most powerful tools in shaping mood, and Chai Guys Portobello in London‘s Notting Hill showcases how colour schemes can create a cosy ambience. Designed by SODA, the café utilises a warm colour palette inspired by the spices of masala chai. 

The 55-square-metre café features earthy browns and beiges to create a sense of warmth and comfort. These colours not only reflect the informal, relaxed nature of tea drinking but also create a subtle yet inviting atmosphere, inviting customers to stay a little longer and enjoy their time in an intimate setting. The thoughtful application of these hues creates a subtle yet effective environment that resonates with the café’s intended vibe.

Lighting as a Design Element: Café Constance

Lighting can transform a space, and this transformative power can be seen in Montreal‘s Café Constance, designed by Atelier Zebulon Peron, which demonstrates the transformative power of lighting. Although unconventional to most, the café features pink pendant lights resembling dancers’ skirts. 

These lights contrast with the building’s large concrete surfaces and extensive glazing. This composition softens the industrial feel of the space and aims to introduce a feeling of contemporary architecture through warm and delicate illumination. The lighting enhances the beauty of the architectural elements and also contributes to a balanced and inviting atmosphere, highlighting the role of lighting in shaping a café’s character and ambience.

Playful Furniture: Café Krujok

Furniture plays a central role in creating a café’s theme and overall experience, as shown by Café Krujok in Russia. This café emphasises the critical role of furniture in interior design, which can enhance a café’s thematic experience. The café features playful, doughnut-themed furniture, including soft, squidgy-looking pieces that make the customers feel like they’ve entered a world of baked goods. 

The squidgy furniture, paired with creamy-coloured walls and glossy finishes, creates a whimsical and immersive experience, where shapes, textures, and finishes bring the café’s theme to life. The unique forms and surfaces of the furniture invite interaction and contribute to the café’s sensory experience. This design approach transforms the space into a playful world of doughnuts, adding depth and charm to the customer experience just through the thoughtful usage of furniture.

Material and Texture: Elgin Café

At the Elgin Café, designed by Studio Renesa in Punjab, India, the emphasis on the role of materials in interior design takes the spotlight. This emerald-green bistro mainly features Udaipur green granite, which evokes the ambience of outdoor dining. 

The use of this rich, textured material in wall panelling and tabletops has helped the design studio create a cohesive, visually striking environment. The maximalist colour-blocking approach, centred around deep green tones, reinforces the café’s upscale theme while blending luxury with natural beauty. The choice of materials defines the aesthetic and enhances the space’s sensory experience.

Unique Décor: DOT Coffee Station

Sometimes, it’s the unique details that turn a café into an unforgettable experience. At DOT Coffee Station in Kyiv, Ukraine, designed by YOD Group, playful décor plays a major role. A key feature of this café is how the mosaic tiles are arranged in playful patterns, including a humorous “facepalm” gesture and a pink heart emoji. 

These mosaics are used to evoke emotions that are relatable to city dwellers, expressing frustration in an exaggerated way. These distinctive elements, combined with stainless steel stools and metallic accents, contribute to the café’s engaging and emotional appeal. The creative use of mosaics sets the tone and sparks curiosity, making the café more than just a coffee station—it becomes an interactive and memorable space.
