Stories have been and continue to be one of the foundational means by which humans communicate and connect. From the simple modes like tales, folklore, to theatre and dramas, to movies, and even in this modern age, to brand stories and marketing copies. Stories hold great power!

Like Thor’s hammer or Iron Man’s suit, stories are a weapon by which greater impact can be felt, greater work can be done. From the simplest and most obvious stories to silent narratives, the power of storytelling can not be over emphasized. Regardless of the mode employed, be it oral or on a medium, storytelling in itself is a powerful tool.

Stories and Humans: The Connection

In every culture and across every time period, all the way to the first, storytelling has been an intrinsic part of human communication. The culture and tradition of telling stories bring people together, with different cultures having various expressions for how that is achieved. At community gatherings, children are told stories of bravery, courage, and adventure.

Storytelling is not always fictitious; every recount of personal experiences or ambition to others is also storytelling. Storytelling is the way humans communicate life experiences, daring feats, terrible losses, great successes, embarrassing moments, and so many others. Every gathering of humans will include people sharing stories about themselves or stories they heard. Storytelling is how humans connect with others by sharing and listening to others share.

Culture Preservation and Religious Indoctrination

Traditions and rituals have passed down from generation to generation through stories of deities told and retold to every new generation. For every religion, culture, or society that still holds on to its core values, a solid storytelling manual can be emulated.

Stories are shared of the important instructions given by deities to men, of the lives of these men. Through storytelling, actions and their consequences are retold in ways that are practical and relatable, with different cultures highlighting values that are acceptable to them and frowning on traditions considered taboos.

A deep dive into the various societies in the world will reveal a truckload of stories that, when examined, can be seen to be the building block of all the values each society holds dear.

Storytelling and Education

Humans are more likely to remember what is relatable and practical rather than abstract and ambiguous. Storytelling is used to help both young and old understand concepts better and deeper.

Children are taught basic morals using tales and fiction. Some stories emphasize the benefits of honesty, diligence, and hard work. Some portray the dangers of certain associations. These children grow up to fully understand morality, patriotism, and humanity through stories constantly being retold and enforced.

Another example is the use of storytelling in formal education. Mathematical problems are told like stories about people, “A man traveled 20km at 40km/hr…” or “If Jane has 10 apples, give 3 to Paul…” and so many others. This simple technique leverages the power of storytelling in assisting the mind to visualize and understand.

Inspiration, Advocacy, and Action

Storytelling is a very powerful tool that is used to build empathy, inspire people, and move passive observers to taking action and solving real world problems. By capturing emotions and evoking passion and compassion, people otherwise uninterested or ignorant can become active participants.

Storytelling can be used to inspire consumers about what is possible, what they have the power to accomplish, and how the world can be. When stories of historical figures who fought to solve specific problems are told, the listeners are filled with gratitude and awe. These stories have the power to inspire listeners to do the same things. A good story will do way more than facts or statistics ever do.

The Sustainable World Problem

With all the data on the current conditions of our earth and the need for change, with all the different bodies and unions governing various aspects of this cause, and with all the many policies and laws set to ensure the planet is saved. Still, on a global level, little progress has been made.

Why are certain countries or people more interested in this problem? Why are some more committed to seeing a solution, and some uninterested? While there are many factors that affect the accomplishments of these goals, such as the level of development and the economic capacity of the different regions, other factors, such as implementation gaps or political will, when carefully observed, all point to a foundational factor. This fundamental factor is the level of willingness to pursue, accompanied by the perception of urgency associated with the problem.

A world where only a select few think a problem is worth fighting for is a world that may never see that problem solved. Yes, there are problems beyond humans, for example, a Global crisis like the COVID 19 pandemic. However, more progress can be made when all, not some, not few, see the problem and fight to ensure a solution is achieved. Progress can be made when all hands are on deck. How then can all hands be put on deck?

Storytelling: A Tool to Build Global Involvement

With the mission of bringing all hands to the deck and ensuring all see the need and urgency for a sustainable world, the solution is not external but internal. What can be used to connect people of different races and regions? What is the universal mode of communication that humans have?

Simple answer? Stories. Stories have the power to establish connections by evoking and building empathy. Through stories, people are inspired and motivated. Retelling the story of Sustainability in a way that elicits and evokes empathy is very important to achieving involvement and participation on a global scale.

In retelling and re-branding the problem Sustainability aims to tackle is the need to properly articulate the urgency of the message. By properly utilizing storytelling, empathy is not only built, but urgency is established. This way, the timeline for success isn’t just specific to certain people but to all.

Finally, in storytelling, especially those that involve heroes. The hero becomes a person that is understood and empathized with, the hero becomes a source of inspiration, and also becomes a model to emulate. A good story ends with a moral lesson, which can also be rephrased as a call to action.

The power that storytelling holds, therefore, needs to be carefully and properly used to educate, inspire, and motivate to action all who hear it. Using the various modes, mediums and methods, in films, music, art, social media, novels, documentaries, and many others. The power of a single story goes beyond simply relaying facts and data!
