In 2025, architecture keeps evolving: artificially-driven designs, inventive materials, adaptive reuse, and a deeper sense of social responsibility. Amongst leading inventors to this shift stands David Adjaye, whose work continues to reflect a human-centred, sustainable, and cultural ethos. He is known for his culturally responsive yet contemporary architectural style that emphasizes human and social engagement, often through the integration of modernist forms with influences from his African heritage, and an understanding of the vernacular.

Adjaye’s Global Practice
Sir David’s practice, Adjaye Associates, maintains offices in London, New York, and Accra. The studio’s global footprint echoes its founder’s transnational background: born in Tanzania to Ghanaian parents, educated in London, and globally acclaimed.
Working alongside lead architect Phil Freelon in collaboration with the SmithGroup JJR, Adjaye provided the conceptual vision for the renowned Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), which was completed in 2016.
In 2024, Adjaye’s firm reorganised along new lines: Lucy Tilley, Pascale Sablan, and Kofi Bio took on leadership of the London, New York, and Accra studios, respectively, as Adjaye stepped into the role of Executive Chair and Principal Architect. This move allowed the practice to better maintain leadership across continents while maintaining the design vision at its core.

Over the years, David Adjaye has received some of the world’s highest honours in architecture. He was knighted in 2017 and named on Time’s list of the 100 most influential people the same year. In 2021, he won the Royal Gold Medal from RIBA, followed in 2022 by the AIA Gold Medal and the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture. Most recently, 2025 has seen him collect the Mario Pani Award in Mexico and a Rethinking the Future Award for his residential project 130 William. Together, these accolades highlight both his global influence and his ability to shape an excellent architecture.
Adjaye’s Projects Shaping 2025
1. Children’s International Cancer Research Centre (ICCR), Ghana
One of the most high-profile projects is the International Children’s Cancer Research Centre, developed in collaboration with the Wish4Life Foundation. It will be unveiled at the “Time, Space, Existence” exhibition at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale held at Palazzo Bembo until 23rd November. The centre represents architecture’s growing role in social impact—this time, addressing paediatric health care in Ghana through design that communicates hope, support, and innovation.

2. Princeton University Art Museum, USA
The Princeton University Art Museum, designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, will open on 31 October 2025. The new 146,000-square-foot facility reflects a renewed approach to academic architecture, with light-filled spaces that reflect the diversity of works the museum houses.

3. Studio Museum in Harlem, New York

Another long-anticipated project, the new Studio Museum in Harlem building on West 125th Street, is scheduled to open in late 2025, with a formal reopening expected in November. The design pays homage to Harlem’s vernacular architecture—its inverted stoop, stepped glass facade, and community-focused layout are physical metaphors for openness and local identity.
4. National Cathedral of Ghana
Adjaye continues his work in Accra with the design for the National Cathedral of Ghana—a sacred architecture project that seeks to reflect Ghanaian cultural and spiritual identity through design. The cathedral features Akan-inspired roofing and Ashanti-inspired facades, woven into a form rooted deeply in local symbolism. However, this project has recently faced scrutiny, drawing reports of a governmental inquiry into its procurement process.

5. CARIFESTA XV Competition
In a move that nods to emerging talent and cultural engagement, Adjaye Associates is overseeing a design competition for a temporary pavilion at CARIFESTA XV in Barbados (August 2025). Emerging designers are invited to propose a pavilion to reflect Caribbean identity, built with local or recycled materials. The winning design will be executed and constructed ahead of the festival, with mentorship from Adjaye’s firm.
6. Lorna Simpson’s Studio on the Market
A quieter, yet evocative, point of note: the Brooklyn studio designed by Adjaye for artist Lorna Simpson has been placed on the market (asking price US $6.5m). Completed in 2006, the townhouse-style studio showcased the architect’s sensitivity to artistic needs—double-height spaces, flexible interiors, abundant natural light, and a black-skinned façade. Its resale speaks not just to property, but to architectural legacy and adaptability over time.

Identity and Social Agenda
What emerges from all these projects is clear: Adjaye is as much a creative thinker as a designer. He frames architecture as meaningful, expressing not just forms but inclusivity, memory, and sustainability.

In 2025, David Adjaye stands at the intersection of architecture and culture. His work spans continents and typologies; from museums and cathedrals to communal centres and residential, yet is grounded by his principle of architecture as an agent of transformation.
By empowering local leadership within his firm, mentoring emerging designers, and completing architecture that exists in dialogue with identity and environment, Adjaye firmly reflects the new spirit of architectural practice – socially engaged, contextually rich, and future-ready.
