The location of this project is the single most important aspect of the design. Being a corner site and located in a “green” area of the already green Bangalore city, India, the site is juxtaposed next to an apartment complex situated on a hill and thus there are no neighboring buildings on one side but instead covered with an avenue of trees and plantings.

The design premise was to get the maximum advantage of the greenery, light & ventilation gifted to us. As such large openings going up to the roof on the eastern & northern facades makes it airy. The water bodies on the north and the landscape gives a soothing effect when seated in the living or the dining area.
An open type elevated kitchen overlooks the living while being easily accessed from the dining gives a sense of vastness. The sloping nature of the site on one side allowed us to make the maximum use of the site by creating a basement for parking, home theater, office space and a dump room. It also incorporates a tub area for the kids to enjoy some time-out.

The first floor is dedicated to the master bedroom which is more of a suite room comprising of the bed area, wardrobe area, seating, a small green space and a bathroom while there is also the daughter’s room and a small family space.
Going up further, a gym & an open landscaped terrace with a barbecue counter completes the house. Being a very close knit family, get-together & movie nights are a common practice with their cousins. With the barbecue space also doubling up as a screen and seating, its an ideal gathering space for the evenings.

The large quantum of light coming into the house allowed us to experiment with dark & copper shades of flooring. The open staircase cantilevered from the wall is a combination of steel & concrete wrapped with a 5mm tile giving a feel of the tread made from a solid block. The staircase topped with a skylight makes for shadow patterns which move though-out the day along with the sun.
The clean lines of the house gives a timeless feel and will not age at least for another generation. Small pockets of greenery juxtaposed strategically gives the feel of landscaping when viewed from any part of the house. All in all, an ideal residence for an Indian nuclear family with enough private and public places to met the family’s varied needs.
About Ashwin Architects
The Firm
Ashwin Architects was started in mid – 2003 with the express intention of Bridging the Divide that exists between people’s perception of their personal spaces & the stark reality of the buildings coming up in our urban jungles.
Experience lies in holistic designs for individual residences, bungalows, development of housing layouts, apartment complexes, commercial complexes and gated communities.
As architects in Bangalore, the firm transcends the divide between contemporary architecture and the cultural context which they are set in. Add the rising need for energy efficient green buildings and increased stress on optimization of available spaces.
