The development transformed a 12,000-square-meter area of the former border wasteland between East and West Berlin into an urban residential quarter, designed  as a courtyard garden complex and with an underground parking garage and a few commercial spaces located on the street side, overall post-densification.

The urban, intergenerational living gets its special atmospheric quality from the interior, almost park-like garden: It leads from the entrance gate axially aligned past two inner courtyards and the adjoining residential buildings to the adjacent cathedral cemetery and its neo-Gothic cathedral chapel.

Studio Profile:

Since December 1999, Eike Becker and Helge Schmidt have jointly managed the office Eike Becker_Architekten in Berlin. The portfolio comprises urban planning, high-rise buildings, cultural and residential structures, offices and hotels as well as the conversion of buildings for trade, industry, and housing. Our services include Consulting, General Planning, Urban Development, Interior Architecture and Product Design. We are passionate about the cities of today with its people, public spaces and its endless possibilities for improvement. Everything that surrounds us is planned, built, maybe torn down and re-built. As such, everything is architecture if understood from this perspective. Eike Becker_Architekten work on the future of cities with a team of almost 60 creative minds. We are excited to take part in this process, and help make our cities better cities. Better for many people.
