Less than two months after sales launched at Hendrix House – the highly anticipated, work-from-home-inspired development located at 429 Second Avenue in Manhattan’s Kips Bay – half of its 60 condominium units are sold. The project, designed by award-winning, New York City-based DXA Studio, with interiors by Paris Forino, and developed by New Empire Corp, also celebrated topping out last week.

The 12-story building offers a range of condominiums in studio, one-, and two-bedroom layouts, as well as a host of amenity spaces that marry elegant design with innovative functionality.
“Blending past and future, our design draws inspiration from the rich history of Kips Bay, as well as the changing nature of the home office,” said Wayne Norbeck, Partner at DXA Studio. “The last several years have certainly clarified the importance of home, and we wanted to create a building that is both iconic within the neighborhood and thoughtful in the way the residents are able to live and work. We are excited to see that our approach has resonated with buyers.”
In designing the building’s façade, DXA looked to the legacy of Hendrick Hendricksen Kip, the neighborhood’s namesake. Before becoming a New Amsterdam Assemblyman in 1647, Kip worked as a tailor, which inspired an abstracted theme of weaving two materials together – in this case, white masonry and brass. The design imbues the residences contained within the building with an elevated sense of refinement, while the metalwork itself brings an ever-changing, reflected vibrancy to the streetscape. The architecture is also defined by a dynamic, curved-glass corner and a metal-and-glass penthouse that breaks down into an atelier on top of the building, offering a seamless interior-to-exterior experience.
The exterior design works in tandem with the interiors. Full-height windows not only enliven the outside of the building, but also provide residents with stunning views of the city and abundant natural light. Every home is tucked back into and protected by the façade’s external grid, which creates a sense of seclusion and sanctuary in the heart of the city. The layout of the units was informed by the pandemic and the evolving nature of work, with purpose-built work-from-home spaces incorporated into each residence.
The building’s amenities were designed to bring residents together in welcoming, user-friendly spaces that encourage comfort and connection. They include a fully attended lobby-lounge, a co-working center for residents, private meeting and phone rooms, a well-appointed fitness center complete with private yoga studio, and a wellness spa, which features a steam room and sauna. A private courtyard and landscaped rooftop terrace offer opportunities to socialize, entertain, or dine al fresco, or to simply enjoy the panoramic views of the city.
“The speed with which we have reached this 50% threshold is a testament to the world-class team of designers, builders, and sales experts who wake up every day with the goal of delivering something special for today’s luxury buyer,” said Bentley Zhao, Chairman and CEO of New Empire Corp. “Among its many qualities, Hendrix House is custom-tailored to realize innovative in-home and community spaces which celebrate the philosophy of community and interconnected living.”
