As a live/work studio, the dwelling begins a new history, tethered to a storied site as home. Referencing the loss of another structure on site to a fire, the charred shou sugi ban rainscreen siding wraps a portion of the exterior in a patchwork fashion, allowing interior light to seep through as the evening darkness arrives.

With much of the lower level open as a work area and breezeway, the stair leading to the living areas is silhouetted in the open-jointed slatting of the glowing lower level. Above, the interior is rendered as a juxtaposition of old and new, where existing gambrel roof and wall structure is exposed or concealed in strategic locations by more contemporary clean white wall finish.

The addition of the rectilinear volume above the original hay storage level accommodates a lofted sleeping area partially open to the main living space and kitchen.

The rustic industrial language of both finishes and fabrication lend a sturdy timelessness to the overall experience of the home and office studio. This project exemplifies a true blend of architectural language within a layered context.
