While each individual is bestowed with a unique perspective, the study of architecture helps one understand the space and question a design’s existence. Before the study of architecture, individuals knew to document these structural marvels but failed to interpret the creation. But, with architectural knowledge, every individual is presented with a different perspective derived from their individuality, enabling them to go beyond the physical structure and into the creators’ minds.

Historic monuments, contemporary buildings, and other architectural spaces are certain to be included in a traveller’s itinerary, yet few people are aware of the significance of these spaces or the inspiration behind them. Learning architecture may provide one with a deeper understanding of the subject and give them the ability to appreciate, critique, and question the design. Knowing the subject enables all to approach a place with a fresh perspective and contribute to the design of other spaces using their derived insights.

With added attention to detail gained through the study of the subject, one starts to observe that every architectural space or structure gets its unique value due to its distinct elements similar to how humans are identified by their distinct features. Be it a heritage structure or a skyscraper, each architectural building has distinct elements to observe such as materials used, the form of the structure, the concept and much more, which act as defining characteristics of a design. This definition of a structure is an amalgamation between an individual’s personality, life experiences and knowledge of architecture. From studying the structures to being able to put forth their take on it or being able to design it, this alteration of perspective is owed to the study of architecture.

Architecture in the earlier period was more about shelter and protection, but as evolution progressed, it became more about cohabitation. Once the issue of survival was resolved, humanity turned to study architecture to build civilisations and meet the requirements of an expanding population. With the change in architectural style over time, it is interesting to see how an architect’s perspective has changed as a result of periodic upheavals, revolutions, wars, and movements. To create designs that are most suited for the present and the future, an architect today uses the timeline’s research in conjunction with the adaptation of new technologies and innovations from a fresh viewpoint.

Skyscrapers

These high-rise structures, which are the distinguishing features of a city’s skyline, certainly live up to their designation as “skyscrapers” as they stand towering on the ground. Aside from its gorgeous exterior, the architecture allows us to delve deeper into its existence and construction. For instance, the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest skyscraper in the world and is reminiscent of the onion domes seen in Islamic architecture, can only be observed by someone with a background in architecture.

In addition to their structural strength, they have a lasting impact on the location within the context of an urban landscape. A skyscraper may also provide information about the socioeconomic development of a city and its ultramodern way of life. Initially built as a defence mechanism, these structures have made their way into commercial and residential spaces due to the limited land areas available for development.

A gathering space to revere divinity, these places are crucial to defining a town’s culture and heritage. These locations serve as the ultimate buildings that shape society and redefine history while providing a place of prayer and refuge for those who uphold the established religion. These temples of worship were noted as being of the utmost importance in books on the history of architecture since they aid in the study of architecture, the culture of many timeframes, and prosperity.

The architecture of these spaces depicts the grandeur to instil cultural and religious values in its followers and project the economic and technological capacity of those who create or adapt it. Religious architecture or Sacral architecture was the focal point of many civilisations. People acknowledge that these spaces are meant for religious and spiritual growth, which can only be achieved when the space is structured in a particular design. The intention of holy architecture, according to architect Norman L. Koonce, is to make “transparent the boundary between matter and mind, flesh and the spirit.”

Public Spaces

A good public space is a place where the general public can gather for leisure and entertainment and acts as a connecting area in a physical sense. These spaces are the making of a city and its dynamics, defining the character of the city. The study of architectural evolution, from ancient civilizations to the present, enables us to comprehend the significance of such spaces in social, political, and economic terms.

The places that engage in shaping community ties and facilitating an environment for interaction have little to do with design and more to do with the sensitivity that an architect develops during the study of the subject. Public areas like the park, market, and theatre facilitate social interaction and security. Such spaces that connect diversity and make it lively help shape the urban environment into a more secure, equal, and democratic one.

Knowledge of architecture certainly alters the way one perceives spaces and with the mention of space types above one can assert the same. While every space is perceived differently by every individual, through architectural study, this perspective gets a new direction and gives the perceiver the ability to recreate with a fresh outlook. Learning about architecture develops a strong sense of curiosity and wonder. Daniel Libeskind stated, “Architecture is not based on concrete and steel and the elements of the soil. It’s based on wonder.”
