Architecture is the thoughtful making of space aesthetically and functionally. It is the art and science of designing spaces and structures for human use. It is not just about shelter as a basic human need, but also a way of improving people’s quality of life. The impact of architecture, form, and function reflect human needs, solve various problems concerning space usage.

Architecture has always played a significant role in our lives. Architecture influences us, from the lifestyle-the way we live, to how we work and what surrounds us. It affects the way we work, play, and live. It can provide a balance of beauty and function while still staying in tune with the changing needs of our times.

Perception of Viewing Spaces

The perception of viewing places differs from one individual to another, culture to culture, region to region, etc… Architects visualize it as an expression of culture, lifestyle, ethnic diversity, including building environment, aesthetics, functional aspects, style, and details.

Architecture engages all our senses, whether they are designers or users. If we take an instance of an interior gallery – the scenic art in presence of light that is a visual retreat to the eyes, the unique sounds water elements rays of sunlight into the interior, the aroma of flowers, water, and interior plants, the natural feel of materials, the air that we breathe from the natural landscapes; every single detail capture one’s attention towards it.

Here, we discuss the three significant aspects and impact of architecture in our lives: from an individual, building communities to energy and environment.

Mood, Well-Being and Health

The planning of structures, the spaces we are using, and the surrounding environment affect the users’ mood, well-being, and health. Everything from space planning, ergonomics, colors, textures, materials, landscapes affects an individual’s health. Well-designed spaces provide comfort, have a positive effect on mood, enhance the skill and productivity of the occupant.

Architecture helps occupants to feel relaxed, delighted, and engaging that is connected to nature, with well-lit spaces, ample natural light, and ventilation, landscapes, organic materials, aesthetics, etc.. It also escalates user comfort and increases productivity.

Impact of architecture in Community building

Architecture and design have always been a part of community development and building societies. Well-designed buildings and structures help develop social interaction, promote social gatherings, know cultures, beliefs, and thus build flourishing communities.

Even though there is a rise in condominiums/high-rise buildings (due to land space constraints and population growth), these spaces share amenities and infrastructure. In addition, they provide a platform for individual development, minimize cultural differences among citizens, provide safety, broaden the business, and build well-founded groups, knitting societies collectively. If we take an instance of a single condo accommodating common play areas, gymnasium, swimming pool, a retail outlet, a multipurpose hall, etc.., where people connect, share or educate their skill-sets like arts, crafts, and science, subjects, dancing, yoga, swimming, gym activities, etc.

Architecture also sustains the tradition and customs alive for ages together. The places of worship-such as temples are spaces where a community of prayers, the celebration of festivals, dance, and drama performances take place and are peaceful and veracious places in extending performing arts that amplify our tradition persisting for centuries.

Influence of architecture in Technology, Energy, and Environment

Advances in technology in products, materials, design principles have positive effects on the built environment. Architecture and technology have been addressing the increased environmental problems affecting today. The dynamic intelligent systems have a direct relationship with the environment and adapt to real-time conditions.

Buildings with adaptive systems use less energy and provide more occupant comfort. A well-designed sustainable building reduces the overall impact on the built environment and human health efficiently using resources such as water, energy, and materials, reducing waste and environmental degradation.

To cite an example, Agora tower in Taiwan, an eco-friendly residential tower, with cascading layers of greenery with 23,000 trees and shrubs are projected to absorb 130 tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is equivalent to 27 cars, double layer facades integrated with blinds protect the users from direct solar radiation, 1000sq.m photovoltaic roof which integrates electricity produced from solar rays into electric energy, the sky gardens which will naturally filter rainwater, etc.
