Architecture School is a five-year program that holds a very significant part of our growth as individuals, and as an architect. With tons of work, deadlines, and many sleepless nights, we always manage to find joy in the work and time we spent together in the studios. Our homes have become a place just for sleeping and sometimes maybe not even that, spending nights in the studio, and trying to get rid of many kinds of insects that we discover while lying on the studio floors. It is still an irony that even with such hectic schedules and a difficult lifestyle we do miss the studying in architecture school. The studio and the school provide us with a sense of belonging with people of similar interests and similar lifestyles that do not make us look like weird zombies deprived of sleep among normal people.
Amongst all this chaos in life with hectic schedules, deadlines, and sleeplessness, we always manage to find the joys of working and spending time together and making moments hilarious for them to be lifelong memories. The popular topic that we always choose to make fun about is our design it helps us grow and make us learn new things from teacher and peers but part from that the interesting thing that we always find funny is how the architecture school buildings seem to be haunted with its years’ old architecture and worn out paints even though we study architecture, our place of studying is in the worst situation itself. The nights in the worn-out building before juries or exams are very busy but at times when we stay back for things other than that, it becomes a hilarious adventure at midnight.
Studying in architecture school, we are always made sure to hear the haunted events that happen to the students who stay their night in studios, we as fresher’s were also made aware of such events but we didn’t get to witness it until we stayed back for an architecture event that was to be held in our school and needed late in the night. Walking around the dark hallways of the school with three friends, two of us decided to prank the other two who were rather very sensitive towards this subject. It was very mean of us to do this but it was one of the most hilarious things that we had done among the nights we spent here working hard for juries and exams, and scaring your friends is something that all of us enjoy doing. The other building apart from our studios was closed down for the events and since it has windows running all around its façade, the light from the event down in the garden kept reflecting in intervals which are scary on the first glance and especially if the person does not have any idea of the source of light. The two of us decided to scare our friends when we walked out in the hallway, with light coming in intervals, and a scary voice from our end caused an immediate scary reaction, a loud shriek, loud enough to stop the event downstairs and make people turn their head around. We laughed so hard that night that the events are still fresh in our minds, coming back down to the event, the people seeing us as we have done something that was a crime and seriously needs to be punished.
Friendships made in architecture school are one of the best; you get to spend so much with the same people over the course of five years that you are aware of their sleeping habits as well. They are the people that stick around you in the time of need and help each other overcome the challenges they face together in architecture school. My schooling in architecture has not been completed yet but during this period of quarantine, I can still experience how it would feel to work away from the studio and peers. It made me realize how much the place and people mean to me and what role they play in my life, and how much I will miss this place once I leave it.
