The past exists only in our memories, while the future exists in our imaginations. The world our previous generations envisioned is the world we are living in. The world we envision today is going to be the future of our next generation. Architecture holds the key to the future of living. 50 years down the lane, opening up the future, what is architecture going to look like? Is it going to be much taller, smarter, and efficient? Or is it going to be the same? Or who knows, is it going to look like a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie?

Through the architect’s eye, the future of architectural education, design process, and implementation must fulfill the needs and solve the existing problems of the present, with the idea and awareness of the past and the future. We need an architecture that is adaptive, responsive, and compatible, an architecture that sustains the test of time, a sustainable architecture.

We may forget what we see and listen to over some time, but what we experience leaves us with a memory of a lifetime. Yes! Virtual reality has entered the world of architecture, making its profound impact on the future and the way we see the world. Apart from the realistic renders and the sophisticated software models, virtual reality is transforming the architectural design process to another level. Speculating the future, virtual reality allows the designers to experiment on the scale and accuracy of the project to its demands.

Architecture not being understood by all, virtual reality creates an opportunity to connect people with architecture. VR is not only a part of the architectural design process but also an integral part of presenting a project. It has the power to replicate real-world scenarios. By experimenting with reality in the virtual world, it minimizes the room for errors in the future. VR can never replace physical reality; it just enhances the experience and adds a new layer to the future of architecture. It leaves us with a question, about the co-existence of reality and virtuality in creating the future of architecture and transforming the way we see the world.

Architecture that Responds

A city that responds, building that reacts. How fascinating is that? Science and technology are inventing new possibilities, on the existence of buildings in future. Architecture combined with technology is revolutionizing the world of the living. Focusing on the needs of the growing population, architects are coming up with design solutions that will last long into the future. One such move is the idea of smart cities and smart buildings. A wave of digital technology, that broadened the dynamics of design in architecture.

Why is this important? Looking at the rate at which the world’s population is expanding, the demand for new cities is increasing. This is a major challenge to be solved. The amount of environmental impact these buildings would have in the future is unimaginable. Hence, building smarter and more efficient is the way into the future of architecture. A smart building management system responds to its immediate environment by making adjustments and optimizing the built environment. This is a long-term investment that not only saves energy but also runs the building better. Isn’t this a smart and sustainable move into the future?

Keeping Everyone in Mind

Architecture is a universal language. It is for all. It serves no barriers or boundaries. The only way to move forward into the future is to move together as one. As one whole world, blurring our barriers and celebrating our differences. Universal architecture is architecture for all. It is necessary for the architects of the future to design buildings that are accessible to all. A building design that keeps in mind the barriers experienced by a wide variety of people around the world.

The universal design comprises a broad spectrum of design principles. Starting from the layout to the materials to the colors used, it goes down to every micro detail of the design process to create a space that is accessible. The universal design promotes an inclusive environment that is more sustainable and better for all.

Isn’t this the future we all need? A future designed for all.

What the future of architecture holds? The buildings are going to reach higher. The cities are going to get tighter. The resources are going to fall shorter. In return, the environment is going to bear an impact that can never be reversed. How can we minimize the negative impact of buildings on the environment? Sustainable architecture might be the answer. Sustainable architecture aims to approach the design methodologies that minimize the building’s negative impact on its environment.

Sustainable architecture begins from the location of the site to its layout to its horizontal and vertical circulation, to its design methodologies involving heating, ventilation, and cooling efficiencies, etc. Digging deeper also involves the generation of renewable resources of energy like solar and wind. Apart from designing a building that works for the environment, we need to find a way for it to sustain itself in the future. This involves constant evaluation and maintenance systems like water and waste management. Sustainable architecture is one way to maintain the ecological balance, by not disturbing the environment to its worst. As architects of the future, we need to create a difference in this world and make a conscious effort towards a better living.

Right from the beginning of our lives to planning our futures, we constantly keep making plans to sustain, survive and live the life we always dreamt of. We find options A, B, C and it goes on. But have we ever wondered about the future of our basic living? The future of architecture and the way it defines our world? And the options that we need to come up with, for the future of our existence on this planet? What lies ahead? That’s the question we all need to address.
