Architecture has become an important part of our lives. Architecture does not simply mean just a roof over our head; rather it has become an emotion. We express a lot through our buildings. We express our economic status, our attachments, our forte, our mindset, etc.

But even after all that, what is the future of architecture?

Design of the future

The design standards have been changing, the materials have been changing, the techniques have been changing and even the functional aspects of buildings have been changing. Designs are either being too visually attractive or too functionally complete. Visual aesthetics are providing us with some exceptional buildings that stand out from the crowd.

The functional purposes of the buildings are the real deal. One cannot turn a building into a mall that was meant to be a hospital. The design of that particular building is always made concerning its users and their necessities. Modern-day buildings are trying to play more than a single role, for example, Burj Khalifa; the tallest building on the earth has shopping complexes, restaurants, luxury hotels, and even residences inside it.

Many of the modern-day buildings have a similar case. The future buildings will more likely focus on the same, creating and incorporating more purposes under the same roof. This approach requires the latest technology which is improving daily. Buildings are becoming more energy-efficient and hopefully, the buildings of the near future will certainly become a bit more.

Materials of the future

The future of architecture also depends on the type of materials and techniques being implemented. Earlier construction took a long time, but now houses can be built in a matter of days, all thanks to the advancements in the field of construction materials and techniques. The use of unique and exotic materials has become a trend and in the coming future, this trend will achieve new peaks.

From electro-chromic glass to shiny metal sheets and surfaces, humans are experimenting with all types of materials to give a unique look to their buildings. Skyscrapers are being normalized. All the developed and developing countries are normalizing the construction of skyscrapers because of their commercial status. This might increase the number of skyscrapers.

The future of architecture holds a great opportunity for the refinement of designs. Designs are evolving daily, and trends are changing too, leaving behind a world full of options and fickleness. The designs are evolving based on their physical representation. Architects are implementing unreal concepts like cymatics, fluidics, fractal geometry, etc. to their designs and the results are satisfying. Such implementations are producing designs that were termed as fictional or movie-like.

The possible types of representation in the future

Modern-day buildings look alien-inspired or drawn from sci-fi movies. Architects are experimenting a lot on the form of modern-day buildings. Buildings are being inspired by biological creatures, fiction, science, and much more. Artificial intelligence will surely play a big role in the future of architecture. Nowadays, AI is capable of doing unreal things. It can design, plot a plan, suggest a layout, and can even estimate the cost and time required for the construction.

We are living in a digital era, and it has taken the world to new heights. Long back ago, there used to be hand-drafted sheets that explained the plan of a building; and now the same job is done on software making it much more accessible and easy to convey. This is the sign that soon in the future, plans will be discussed on holographic projections and models. The advancement in the field of science has shown a never-ending path for perfection. There are many possibilities in the field of architecture and that gives the user or client a wide array of options to choose from. This makes the user more powerful and lets him/her get a design of his/her dreams.

A long while back, huge mansions and residences were trending and now the rapid increase in the population of the world is making us settle for a lesser area. This led to the birth of the tiny house movement. Across most western countries, people are getting inspired by the concept of tiny houses and are trying to build one for them. In the future, even the concept of tiny homes might inspire the whole world and that might result in the proper use of required space.

The architecture of the present times is quite fresh and unique. No building is similar to another; at least they have differences in their shape, size, materials, layouts, etc. The present era might lead to a future that appreciates visual aesthetics or a future that respects the idea of space and functionality. The future of architecture is certainly a bright one, which will surely serve mankind in the way we want it to.

The importance of architecture is at the peaks presently and it’ll keep growing as the future gets closer. Till now, architecture was moulded as per our needs and choices, but in the near future, we might have to mould our needs and choices around our architecture.
