Nirali Multispeciality Hospital (NMH) and its specialized counterpart, Nirali Cancer Hospital (NCH), stand as a testament to the vision of philanthropist Padma Vibhushan awardee, Mr. A.M. Naik. Nestled within the A.M. Naik Healthcare complex in Navsari, near Surat, this sprawling 20,000 square meter facility is a harmonious blend of medical expertise and compassionate care. The overarching architectural envelope and structural framework were masterfully crafted by ECC, an in-house design firm of L&T, renowned for its expertise in Engineering, Design, Research, and Consultancy (EDRC). Our role was to breathe life into these spaces, crafting interiors that not only met the stringent requirements of a multispecialty hospital but also fostered a sense of calm and well-being.
The 400 beds multispeciality hospital, a six-story edifice, encompasses a wide array of medical specialties, including cardiology, gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, neonatology, ENT surgery, endocrinology, urology, and pulmonology, among others. Each floor, spanning 2700 square meters, was meticulously planned to optimize efficiency, patient comfort, and ease of navigation.
The ground floor serves as the welcoming face of the hospital. A grand, light-filled registration area sets the tone for a positive experience. Beyond this, the floor houses essential services such as emergency care, out-patient departments (OPDs), a pharmacy, a cafeteria, physiotherapy units, and advanced diagnostic facilities like MRI and X-ray. A central atrium, a verdant oasis, connects vertically through all six floors, bringing in abundant natural light and creating a visual and psychological anchor.
The first floor is dedicated primarily to outpatient consultations, with a dedicated dialysis unit, a dining area, a canteen, and sample collection facilities. The second floor is home to the gynecology department and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), along with patient rooms and a day observation area.
The third floor is a surgical hub, housing six technologically advanced operation theaters, intensive care units (ICUs), and a Cath Lab. The fourth and fifth floors accommodate patient rooms, ranging from general wards to specialized and suite rooms, as well as administrative offices.
A critical aspect of the design process was to balance the clinical requirements of a hospital with the creation of a soothing environment. The use of a neutral color palette, inspired by nature, and the incorporation of natural light and greenery were instrumental in achieving this equilibrium. We believe that a connection to nature can significantly contribute to a patient’s healing journey.
Art played a pivotal role in enhancing the patient experience. Nature-inspired artwork adorned the walls and ceilings, even in enclosed spaces like MRI rooms. This thoughtful integration of art transformed the hospital into a visually stimulating and emotionally uplifting environment.
Beyond aesthetics, functionality was paramount. The design optimized workflows, ensuring smooth patient movement and efficient staff operations. The use of appropriate materials and finishes created a clean and sterile environment while contributing to the overall ambiance.
The hospital’s design is a testament to the belief that healthcare is not merely about treating illness but also about nurturing the human spirit. By creating a space that is both functional and emotionally supportive, we have contributed to a holistic approach to patient care. The Nirali Multispeciality Hospital is more than just a building; it is a symbol of hope, healing, and human compassion.
