Piran Kaliyar | Places to Visit in Haridwar
Built around the 13th century, the Piran Kaliyar is a dargah dedicated to Hazrat Makhdoom Allauddin Ali Ahmed ‘Sabir’ who was a saint of the Chisti order. It is located in the southern part of Haridwar and was built by the Sultan of Delhi Ibrahim Lodi.
It is one of the most revered shrines by Muslims in Haridwar but what makes it unique is that it is also equally revered by Hindus. This dargah is a symbol of unity since it’s a place that signifies the amalgamation of two major religions in India- Hindu, and Muslim. Tourists often visit the Dargah with the common belief that it fulfills all the desires of the devout.
Chandi Devi Temple
The temple is located on Neel Parvat and was built by king Suchat Singh in 1929. The main deity of the temple was established by the great saint Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The temple is a 3km trekking track from Chandighat and can also be accessed by cable cars.
It is commonly believed that it’s the same place where Goddess Chandi killed Chanda-Munda, army chief of the Demon kings. It has both historical and spiritual significance among the rest of the temples in Haridwar. It is one of the Pancha Tirth and is one of the most ancient temples in North India. The temple is also referred to as the “Neel Parvat Tirth” and is built in North Indian architectural style.
Bhimgoda Kund Tank | Places to Visit in Haridwar
Located 1km from Har ki Pauri, the Bhimgoda tank is considered sacred for its mythological significance. It is a heritage site and one of the most must-visit places in Haridwar. As per mythologies, it is believed that Lord Bhima (one of the Pancha Pandavas) drew water from the rocks by thrusting his knee (goda) in this place. Since then, it is called Bhimgoda (Bhim= Lord Bhim, and Goda= Knee).
The tank is surrounded by gardens and is fragrant with flowers. It is adorned with fountains to magnify the beauty of the place. The tank has the water from the river Ganga flowing into it and a canal deviates the water into the tank. It also has a dam constructed in its vicinity and is an architectural wonder itself.
Pawan Dham
Pawan Dham is an ancient temple in Haridwar located in Bhagirathi Nagar, Bhupatwala. It is a social welfare non-profit organization. It is managed by the Geeta Bhawan Trust Society of Moga and is revered among Hindu pilgrims.
The temple follows ancient Indian architecture and showcases intricate elements, elaborate glasswork, peculiarly designed walls, and houses idols adorned in rich jewels and precious stones. The major highlight of the temple is the idol of Lord Krishna preaching the Bhagavad Gita to Arjun.
Ghats in Haridwar | Places to Visit in Haridwar
Ghats in India have spiritual beliefs of their own. It is commonly believed in Indian culture that a bath in the Holy, sacred water of the river Ganga washes all the sins and achieves Moksha. And that results in a large number of people gathering at the banks of the river giving ‘Ghats’ spiritual significance. They become a common point for people to gather and celebrate events and functions on the banks of the river.
Haridwar is one of the five Tirth most commonly visited by masses of people to visit the Ghats and one needs to add them to their list of ‘places to visit in Haridwar’. There are four main Ghats in Haridwar namely; Har ki Pauri (also known as Brahma Kund and renowned for the Maha Aarti on the banks of River Ganga), Gau Ghat (commonly visited for granting forgiveness for the sin of killing cows for food and formally celebrated event of donating cows), Ashti Parvath Ghat (used mainly to float ashes of the dead), Shubhash Ghat followed by Vishnu Ghat, Ramghat, Chandi Ghat, Kushavarta Ghat, Narayani Ghat, and Ramghat. In addition to spiritual awakening, Ghats have historical significance, making them important places to visit to understand local culture and social structure.
