Well known as the temple of Fame, Kirti Mandir- cenotaph of the royal Gaekward family, is one the most stunning buildings built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekward III; during the Raj era in 1936.Like the other buildings that shape the city’s landscape, including Laxshmi villas palace and Khanderao Market, Kirti Mandir’s architecture is also influenced by Indo- Sarcenic style— an revivalist design adapted by Indian architects during the Raj era; and continues to serve as the centre of art and culture, shaping the identity and grandeur of the city.
Historical and cultural importance
Maharaja Sayajirao, during its significant years of rule, brought prominent changes to the city’s architecture. He constructed Palaces, institutions and public buildings, influenced by Indo-sarcenic style- a blend of Indian and colonial architecture elements, which, till modern date, shapes the landscape of the city. Its architectural style is a unique amalgamation of Hindu, Jain, buddist and Islamic motifs, which is an icon of Maharaja’s vision of secularism and unity in diversity.
Sayajirao Maharaja built Kirti Mandir with help of architect Talwalkar— an apprentice of the renowned Robert F. Chrisholm, in the memory of deceased members of the royal Gaekwad family, leaving the edifice to be dedicated to Lord Mahadev. The building preserves the urns of these deceased, cremated in open ground behind the main structure, conserved in separate rooms.
Apart from the memorial, it is a major centre for the exhibitions and cultural activities. Swastik Rangoli Kalakar group of Vadodara actively hosts Rangoli competitions which are annually held at the museum. During diwali, the building lits up to host tourists, art enthusiasts as well as the localities, making it a cherished landmark to experience the rich culture and architecture of the city. The Abhivyakti Sanskrutik Sthal is a recent addition to the campus. A stage created adjoining the Shiv temple has lent vibrancy to the cultural activities in the city. People enjoy musical performances and classical dances, in the beautiful setting of the heritage building.
Architecture Marvel
The magnificent E-shaped monument with Indo-sarcenic domes, terraces, balconies, rises with a prominent central shikhara, about 33-35 metres high, contributing to its civic landmark. It houses 22 rooms, among which few preserve the ashes of the descendents .Notably, the structure of shikhara is adorned with unique engravings representing the sun, moon and the earth, complete with an undivided map of India. It symmetrically flanks the two wings.
The temple’s opulent interiors are adorned with murals, frescos, and marble sculptures representing scenes of hindu mythology. Murals by Bengali Artist Nandlal Bose— pioneer of modern Indian art, has beautifully depicted the battle of Mahabharat, the life of Mirabai, the Natir Pooja and Gangavataran— descent of the Ganga, cover the walls of Central hall. It also houses priceless photographs and statues of the Gaekwads and coins, weapons and other personal items. However, with passing time, the building has been encountered with wear and tear. The royals of Baroda( present day Vadodara), led by Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad have taken steps to conserve and restore the monumental building. With the help of Indian Trust for arts and cultural Heritage ( INTACH), the family plans to conserve and restore the paintings of walls and ceiling by a Bengali artist as well, damaged by the water seepage in the building.
Urban Influences and Impacts on Tourism
Situated near the Vishwamitri Bridge, Kirti Mandir stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of the region. It is covered with tall trees that enchant shadows, enhancing its beauty during both dusk and dawn, creating a lush green environment for the visitors.
Kirti Mandir along with other structures built by Gaekward Family, cover the heart of the city, well known as Sayajigunj. The building structures in its neighbourhood, like MSU university, Kamati Buagh and the most stunning Laxshmi Villas Palace, reflect the architecture style of the 20th century. This Geography not only shapes the identity of the city, preserving the Royal heritage, but also becomes a major Tourist attraction for travel enthusiasts and culture lovers. Heritage walks arranged around these monuments allow students as well as visitors to admire and experience the history and culture of the city. Kirti Mandir, being one such icon, elevates the geography of the region, standing tall with its unique details and tall Shikhara.
Kirti Mandir, though understated, is a splendid example of Indo-sarcenic Architecture that influences the urban landscape of Vadodara city and with conservation steps taken by the initiatives, will continue to celebrate art and tradition of the city.
