Located in a rural area of the Jiangxi province in China, this project focuses on creating a space that resonates with a deep respect for natural landscapes, local culture, and modernity. The design reflects Days in YARD Studio’s signature style: thoughtful integration of natural elements, sustainable architecture, and the creation of spaces that respond to their environment.
Shiyuan House
Shiyuan House is a residential project in China that blends traditional Chinese architectural elements with modern design principles. Commissioned by a private client, the purpose of this house is to create a space that fosters connection with nature, tranquillity, and reflection. The name Shiyuan roughly translates to “stone garden” or “scholar’s garden,” indicating a place meant for quiet contemplation and harmony.
Another key purpose of Shiyuan House is to bridge the gap between traditional Chinese architecture and contemporary design. The designers looked at local architectural traditions that have been in place for centuries, such as the use of wooden screens, stone walls, and courtyards that are central to Chinese vernacular architecture. These elements not only contribute to a sense of place but also embody cultural values such as privacy, family gathering, and spirituality.
However, the studio did not aim to replicate these elements verbatim. Instead, the purpose was to reinterpret and adapt traditional ideas within a contemporary context. By incorporating modern materials like concrete and glass, Shiyuan House acknowledges the technological advancements of today while maintaining the cultural and aesthetic roots that define the area.
For example, the use of stone and wood in the exterior pays homage to traditional Chinese materials, while the clean, minimalist interiors and open spaces reflect modern lifestyle preferences.
