Delhi has always been a place with a rich heritage and eventful past. It has evolved immensely over the years and showcases various structures, from heritage buildings to modern hotels with state-of-the-art amenities. One such hotel is The Claridges. At first glance, the façade seems simple and minimalistic but one feels the grandeur of the place as soon as one steps inside this property.  This hotel was India’s, to begin with, 5-star lodging after freedom, and it is the perfect combination of British colonial style with Indian sensibility. Radiating extravagance, it is one of the finest lodgings in the nation. It is located in the Lutyens area of Connaught Place, outlined by Sir Edwin Lutyens amid Colonial Rule. Built in 1955, the lodging expands over roughly 3 acres of land, comprising 132 rooms counting extravagant presidential suites along with deluxe and premium rooms. The Claridges is a lodging that is not just a hotel, but moreover a social and political point of interest in Delhi.

Impact on Urban Fabric

The Lutyens’ region of Connaught Place in New Delhi has advanced over a long time with numerous government offices, embassies, government houses, and green spaces. As a well-off neighborhood, it grandstands the wealthy legacy and past of the city. The Claridges blend seamlessly with its environment, reflecting colonial British architecture. It moreover serves as a popular spot for visitors, with guests dropping in for a hot cup of tea to appreciate the legacy structure or staying for a few days to absorb all of the colonial charm that the lodging has to offer. The hotel has served as an image of conservation among the city’s rising urbanization, but it radiates charm as a timeless property among the city’s hotels.

Historical Significance

Imagine attending an evening where some of the most eminent pioneers of India have been. Sounds exhilarating, does it not? The luxurious lobby, hallways, and gardens have played host to a vast multitude of discretionary gatherings. It stands as a structure that preserves the rich legacy of the city. The Claridges won the award for India’s Leading Green Hotel at the World Travel Awards 2009 held at London. (Kayina, Upadhyay and Nishant, 2015) This means that apart from being a legacy property, it moreover takes a few sustainability aspects into account- from sustainable landscaping to energy efficiency and much more.

Style and Relevance

An amalgamation of Colonial British Architecture and Art Deco style, the Claridges showcases key elements from both these styles. It has high ceilings which were a part of most colonial British architectural structures in tropical climates to make the space feel grand, airy, and spacious. This style of architecture also integrated lush green spaces which is evident in the vast lawn at the Claridges. It has expansive gardens and open spaces with ample seating for the guests to enjoy a serene and peaceful environment. Symmetrical facades also classified colonial British with little to no ornamentation and a minimalistic design. This is also evident in the design of the Claridges. Colonial British architecture also modified itself according to the region and climate, which is why we see most of these structures with balconies and verandahs in India, similar to the rooms in this hotel.

The subtle influence of Art Deco is visible in the clean lines, streamlined façade, and smooth and unadorned walls. Art Deco exudes luxury which is evident in this elegant 5-star hotel. Even though there isn’t much use of bold colors or patterns, the interiors reflect detailing from this style in flooring, railing, and smaller elements. The amalgamation of both these styles in the 1950s reflects the newly independent India, with a respect for the past and a vision to move forward in the future. British colonial architecture symbolised the country’s past and blended in with its surroundings in the Lutyens area, whilst Art Deco represented a modern approach that focused on breaking away from old patterns and creating a new future.

The suites in the hotel are particularly designed and ornamented to keep up with its name. The artful interior with gold spider marble floor, honey onyx doors, a walk-in closet, and elegant furniture promise an imperial experience the suite stands for. Even the ensuite bathroom adds to the regal stay with its gold-plated washbasins, self-lit magnifying mirrors, and a plunge bathtub along with other state-of-the-art amenities. (Claridges.com, 2024)

The hotel has evolved amidst rapid urbanisation in the city but still, and will always continue to serve as a unique tourist spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the rich colonial heritage of emerging India.
