Our clients bought a two-and-a-half-story house in Toronto. They wanted to remodel the house to make room for their growing family. The previous owners separated the house into three apartments, but they intended to turn it back into a single family home.  The design goal was to open up the common areas to allow the family to be more connected.

The customers desired a warm, contemporary, open-concept home with a Scandinavian feel where they could comfortably entertain for anything from dinner parties to sporting events. Throughout the property, various reading and sitting nooks have been positioned. With the exception of minor brickwork repairs and the installation of new windows that adhered to the building’s original architecture, the front of the house was kept unchanged.

A new basement was dug out and underpinned after the entire interior had been entirely stripped from ground to roof. The original rear brick wall of the house was kept with openings cut through it to the new matte black aluminum addition that houses the kitchen and master bedroom suite above.

Half of the second floor is defined by a double-height space that houses a bathroom and a rectangle of rooms covered in wood. A loft located above the rooms has a ladder for access. The master bedroom and expansive spa-like bathroom are located on the second floor’s second half, which is behind the back brick wall.
