Located in Dongguan, China, and adding a significant new cultural landmark to Guangdong’s Greater Bay Area, the Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Center was officially opened to the public on March 30, 2026, with “The Sound of Songhu,” an inaugural performance by the China National Symphony Orchestra.

The project is designed by ZHA, formerly known as Zaha Hadid Architects, in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design. It embodies movement, performance, and cultural memory through a fluid architectural language that continues the firm’s legacy of fluid architectural expression.

The 45,000-square-meter project is nestled on the shores of Yuehe Lake within Dongguan’s High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

Architecture Inspired by Cantonese Opera

Rather than incorporating decorative motifs directly, the project interprets movement as a visual language inspired by Cantonese Opera—one of southern China’s most influential performing arts traditions. Dongguan is widely recognized as one of the birthplaces of Cantonese Opera, a performance tradition dating back more than seven centuries.

Architecture often tells stories before visitors step inside a building. At Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Center, that story begins with movement. Inspired by Cantonese Opera, the design transforms the flowing motion of traditional costume sleeves into sweeping rooflines and sculptural forms that express rhythm and performance.

The architectural concept is rooted in the expressive gestures of Cantonese Opera performers. Its sweeping rooflines and fluid forms create a sense of rhythm and continuity, transforming architecture into a physical performance.

A Landmark Designed for Public Life

The building’s location within the rapidly growing Songshan Lake district reinforces Dongguan’s ambition to strengthen its cultural infrastructure and attract regional visitors. By combining performance, exhibition, and civic functions within a single complex, the center contributes to the area’s ongoing urban development.

Its dynamic profile appears to flow across the waterfront, creating a strong visual identity while reinforcing its relationship with the surrounding waterfront landscape. Rather than functioning as an isolated object, the building extends into its surroundings through landscaped public spaces, pedestrian connections, and lakefront promenades that encourage public use. Visitors can access multiple event spaces while also engaging with the surrounding outdoor environment.

The center’s sculptural roof extends outward to form generous overhangs, emphasizing movement and creating sheltered outdoor spaces. These forms help define the building’s public presence while improving environmental performance through passive shading.

Sustainability and Climate Responsiveness

Beyond its expressive architectural form, the project incorporates a range of sustainability measures suited to southern China’s humid subtropical climate.

The design takes cues from traditional Lingnan architecture through the use of deep roof overhangs that provide shade and reduce solar heat gain. These major passive strategies are complemented by rainwater collection systems, permeable paving, photovoltaic panels and ecological landscape interventions that support stormwater management.

The restoration of wetland around the site further contributes to biodiversity while helping mitigate flood risks. Together, these measures allow the building to balance architectural expression with environmental responsibility.

Flexible Spaces for Exhibitions and Performances

The center has been designed to accommodate a wide range of multifunctional cultural activities rather than a single-purpose theater.

Its program includes exhibition halls, performance venues, conference facilities, and multifunctional event spaces capable of hosting both local and international gatherings. This adaptability reflects a growing trend in contemporary cultural architecture, where buildings must support diverse forms of engagement and remain active.

The venue officially opened with cultural programming that highlighted its role as a new platform for artistic exchange and public engagement. Its adaptable spaces are expected to support exhibitions, concerts, performances, and community events throughout the year and strengthens Dongguan’s cultural infrastructure.

Continuing ZHA’s Architectural Evolution

The Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Center represents another major addition to ZHA’s growing portfolio in China. While the project retains the fluid geometries often associated with the practice, it also demonstrates an increasing emphasis on cultural interpretation, environmental performance, and public engagement.

As one of the latest completed cultural projects by the firm, the center showcases how contemporary architecture can draw inspiration from local traditions while responding to the demands of a rapidly evolving urban environment.

As cities increasingly seek cultural destinations that combine civic life, sustainability, and local identity, the Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Center demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respond to all three while remaining unmistakably ZHA.
