The Panchalankurichi Fort was built by Veerapandiya Kattabomman in the late 18th century, as his base during his fight against British rule. Kattabomman, a Polygar from Panchalankurichi, has been a celebrated symbol of courage in Tamil Nadu and was among the first to rebel against the British East India Company in India. He refused to pay taxes, citing severe drought in his region, prompting Major John Bannerman to attack the fort. Legend says that Kattabomman and his men resisted fiercely, but reinforcements from the East India Company forced him to flee to Thirukalambur, where he was betrayed by an Ettayapuram Polygar. This betrayal’s impact on Tamil culture ran so deep that today the term “Ettapan” signifies “back-stabber” in Tamil. He refused clemency from the British and was hanged in 1799. The East India Company eventually knocked down the original Panchalankurichi fort. To honour Kattabomman’s legacy, the Tamil Nadu government built a memorial fort in 1974 on the same site. The Archaeological Survey of India takes care of the maintenance of the fort.
