Envisioned as a serene retirement haven that echoes the charm of Chettinad while embracing the tranquility of a Gujarat farm, the project presented a unique challenge: transforming the scale of a sprawling palace into a comfortable home for a family of six.
Architects skillfully reinterpreted the essence of a Chettinad house within a 5400 sq. ft. footprint. Traditional elements such as courtyards, sloping roofs, and intricate patterns seamlessly coexist with modern materials, clean lines, and contemporary amenities. Every detail, from the overall layout to the finest carvings, is meticulously crafted to evoke the spirit of Chettinad while catering to the family’s needs. The renowned Chettinad style, celebrated for its balanced proportions, intricate woodwork, and vibrant colors, finds expression in every corner of the house.

Integrating traditional materials like wood and granite with modern construction techniques was a key challenge. Through meticulous design and experimentation, architects achieved a seamless interplay between old and new. Salvaged satinwood and granite columns from demolished Chettinad houses were repurposed as structural elements, imbuing the space with a rich history. Other elements, including intricate wooden carvings, metal railings, colorful mosaic tiles, and terracotta roof tiles, were custom-made or sourced locally, maintaining design consistency throughout the house. Even the furniture complements the traditional aesthetic, with pieces from the client’s previous home adding a personal touch.

The heart of the house is the central open-to-sky courtyard, a hallmark of Chettinad architecture. This vibrant space connects different rooms and fosters a lively atmosphere. Each room opens onto the courtyard, ensuring a seamless connection with nature.
While the house pays homage to its heritage, it is equally attuned to the demands of contemporary living. Modern amenities and comforts are seamlessly integrated into the design, ensuring a harmonious blend of old-world charm and contemporary functionality. The spacious and well-lit interiors create an atmosphere of tranquility, while the thoughtful layout maximizes natural light and ventilation.

Every room in Savita Wadi is a testament to the architects’ meticulous attention to detail. The bedrooms, for instance, are designed to be private retreats, offering a sense of calm and relaxation. The living room, with its inviting seating arrangements and large windows, is a space for family and friends to gather and connect. The kitchen, a modern interpretation of traditional cooking spaces, is equipped with state-of-the-art appliances while retaining a warm and inviting character.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Savita Wadi is a deeply personal space that reflects the owner’s persona. The architecture skillfully blends Chettinad influences with the local Gujarati way of life, incorporating traditional elements like jhoolas (swings) into the design. Every room is tailored to its function, with careful consideration given to color schemes, natural light, and furniture placement.

Savita Wadi is a testament to the power of tradition and the importance of creating spaces that connect people to their roots. This meticulously crafted abode, a result of collaboration, meticulous planning, and a deep respect for tradition, transports residents to their roots while embracing the comforts of modern living. It is a space designed to make them feel truly at home, a reflection of their unique identity.
