Imagine a world without architecture: a world with no built environment, something that existed decades ago and for a period after the evolution of human beings from apes. The duration of this period can be significant, considering that human existence dates back 300,000 years (Handwerk, 2021), while architecture has been around for approximately 11,000 years (When did architecture start?, 2023). After centuries of architectural existence, it serves multiple functions, like providing shelter, protection, and spaces for social and community interaction. Moreover, it acts as a reflection of cultural identity and heritage, contributing to the prosperity and economic development of the area.

Role of Architecture in Human Existence
Let us first examine the definition of “architecture” and how it relates to human existence. The process that creates the environments in which we work, live, and interact is known as architecture. Further, it also influences the daily experiences and perceptions of people in experiencing a space. Architecture serves practical functions like providing shelter and spaces for working and socializing. Additionally, it also acts as a mirror to the area in which it is present by reflecting values, beliefs, cultural identity aspirations, and challenges of society. Globally, architecture has changed with time from the prehistoric to the current era.

Some of the most famous architectural landmarks that demonstrate human creativity, innovation, and cultural identity over time are:
- The Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt
- The Parthenon of Greece
- The Colosseum of Italy
- The Taj Mahal of India
- The Eiffel Tower of France
- The Sydney Opera House of Australia
- Burj Khalifa of the United Arab Emirates
The Hypothetical Scenario of Human Existence without Architecture

Imagine a society without architecture, where people would not have permanent or established settlements and would instead have nomadic lives. The absence of a permanent shelter would increase community fluidity and decentralization, resulting in a situation where specific activities and interactions lack proper space or sequence. By residing in vegetation-covered temporary shelters, caves, or overhanging rocks. They develop survival strategies, resilience, and resourcefulness. They would need to constantly move in search of suitable habitats, resources, and seasonal conditions, similar to migratory birds and animals. This results in the development of unique cultural adaptations. In this way, humans would be living-in harmony with nature, having a symbiotic relationship with the environment.
Impact on Human Lifestyle and Society

The absence of architecture will significantly change the course of human life, mainly due to the lack of permanent settlement and having to migrate in search of suitable habitats or resources. They will undergo significant cultural shifts resulting in the evolution or disappearance of traditional customs and social norms. Furthermore, it would impact social organization or cohesion meetings within communities, leading to a breakdown in social bonds and cultural exchanges. The lack of architecture will bridge a deeper connection with nature and greater reliance on traditional skills and knowledge. Without architectural intervention, there will be minimal or no environmental impact thus, preserving the biodiversity and ecosystem. Architecture encompasses not only buildings but also infrastructure, including transportation. Therefore, the absence of constructed infrastructure would create problems with resource distribution, waste management, and sanitation. Human beings, innate innovators, and creators, would try to develop dwellings that can be easily assembled, adapted, and dismantled as needed.
Pros and cons of human existence without architecture
The advantages of this scenario include the necessity for humans to lead a nomadic lifestyle in the absence of permanent settlements, and their complete reliance on natural shelters. Which encourages a closer relationship with nature and a better understanding of adaptability and freedom. Because of the unspoiled natural landscapes, it also results in a simpler and more peaceful interaction with nature and has less effect on the ecosystem. Therefore, it aids in maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity. In the absence of a standardized architectural style, communities globally would maintain their own architectural customs and vernacular architecture, leading to more notable social distinctions and preservation.
The cons of this situation include the lack of shelter and security, which leaves the people vulnerable to predators and other environmental hazards like climate. Limited social interaction and cultural disconnection leads to a lack of preservation of culture and heritage. Even though the environmental impact is less, there is a high chance of resource depletion if not controlled. Without architecture, human settlements would lack aesthetics, beauty, order, and efficiency, leading to challenges in accessing essential services and impacting the quality of life and daily activities. Additionally, this will also affect the economic development of the world.
In Conclusion, a world without architecture may offer certain merits, such as minimal environmental impact or cultural diversity. However, it poses significant difficulties associated with shelter, safety, security, social collaboration, economic challenges, and aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, the only merit of this hypothetical situation is the “minimal environmental impact,” which has been the target of sustainable and biomimicry architecture practices.
