Nestled amidst the verdant heart of Ubud, Bali, lies the Alchemy Yoga and Meditation Centre (AYMC), a sanctuary for holistic wellness and sustainable living. (Hardy, 2022) AYMC was established by the well-known vegan restaurant Alchemy. It provides a distinctive fusion of contemporary architecture and immaculate landscaping, turning it into a sanctuary for residents and tourists looking to practice yoga in a tranquil environment. (Andrade, 2022)

Stepping into the Centre:
Two exquisitely designed yoga shalas await guests upon arrival, Tilem signifying the new moon and Lumi or Purnama representing the full moon. These structures, along with a shop, reception, and various outdoor areas, seamlessly integrate into the surrounding permaculture gardens and water features, fostering a sense of harmony with nature. (Hardy, 2022)

The Alchemy of Design:
The design philosophy behind AYMC is deeply rooted in the principles of alchemy. Each material, from the hand-picked bamboo to the locally sourced clay, has been chosen with intentionality, reflecting a harmonious balance between spiritual life, mindful practice (sadhana), and community (kula). Sustainability is woven into the very fabric of the centre, as evidenced by the meticulously tested materials, connections, and systems. (Andrade, 2022)

Emphasise the meticulous attention to detail:
No detail was overlooked in the construction, as every element, from material selection to joint design, was meticulously tested and refined. The design team meticulously hand-picked and matched the bamboo poles, ensuring harmony and structural integrity in every joint and arch. Beyond physical models, the architects used advanced virtual simulations to ensure the bamboo structure could gracefully ‘drape’ like fabric while maintaining structural soundness.
(Abdullahi, 2022)

The Tilem Shala: Intimate Tranquillity
The moment one steps inside Tilem Shala, a cosy, earthy embrace envelops them. The petung bamboo structure supports a red ceiling, descending towards the dark ulin wood floor. Black bamboo arches rise from grey stones, forming a dome that evokes a sense of peace and tranquillity. The intentional lack of directionality in the bamboo arrangement encourages open-mindedness and freedom of movement, fostering a deeper connection with oneself. (Hardy, 2022)
The Purnama or Lumi Shala: Openness and Connection
In contrast, Purnama Shala exudes a sense of light and openness. The light-toned petung bamboo structure rests upon a natural mud floor, crafted with local limestone, soil, and clay. This unique material choice connects users directly to the earth, grounding them in the present moment. Soaring bamboo arches form an anticlastic gridshell roof, resembling flower petals and allowing sunlight to filter through, creating a vibrant and airy atmosphere. (Hardy, 2022)

Basking in the Sunkissed Glow:
Natural light plays a central role in AYMC’s design. Sunlight seeping through the pores between the roof and arches bathes the clay walls in a warm glow, further reinforcing the connection with nature. (Hardy, 2022)

Beyond the Walls: Recognition and Impact
The innovative bamboo architecture of AYMC has garnered international acclaim, featuring in publications like Designboom, Dezeen, Wallpaper, and Archdaily. The Centre’s success lies not only in its aesthetics but also in its commitment to sustainability and cultural sensitivity. It stands as a testament to the power of bamboo as a building material and serves as a beacon for conscious living in harmony with nature. The following are excerpts from the news articles of Designboom, Dezeen, Futurarc, and ArchDaily:
Ibuku’s innovative bamboo structure makes an idyllic yoga centre in Bali, by Designboom (Zeitoun, 2023)
In Bali, surrounded by nature and culture, a peaceful yoga haven emerges: the Alchemy Centre. The architects of Ibuku designed it with nature in mind, using sustainable bamboo and innovative techniques.
The founders envisioned a place that felt peaceful and connected, drawing inspiration from the tranquillity of yoga and the natural surroundings. They chose bamboo, a sustainable material, to bring their vision to life in a unique way.
Imagine elegant bamboo arches rising from natural boulders, creating a strong, airy structure. Each arch rests on its own special base, like flower petals, and they work together for perfect balance. Even the ceiling reflects this harmony, with natural tones blending seamlessly with the vibrant copper roof.
The Alchemy Centre isn’t just beautiful; it’s a statement. By using local bamboo and smart building methods, Ibuku shows the potential of this sustainable material. This centre is more than just a yoga space; it’s a beacon for mindful living and caring for our planet.

Copper-clad bamboo “petals” envelop meditation space in Bali by lbuku in Dezeen (Astbury 2023)
In Bali, Ibuku created a stunning meditation area made of copper-clad bamboo “petals.” The roof’s overlapping arches, which were inspired by flowers, let in a lot of natural light. Sunlight filters through the gaps, connecting the space to the surrounding nature.
This collaborative effort by Kul Kul Farm, Bamboo Pure, and Atelier One utilises thick bamboo arches and a grid shell structure to achieve the petal-shaped roof. Local materials like handmade brick walls and natural plasters contribute to the sustainable and organic feel.

For the Health and Well-Being project, the Lumi Shala was named the winner of Dezeen’s Best Project Award.
Alchemy Yoga Centre: Balancing artistry and technique in Futurarc (Abdullahi, 2022)
In Bali, Ibuku architects sculpted a unique yoga haven, Alchemy Centre, featuring a copper dome resembling nature’s breath. Physical models and computer simulations ensured the intricate bamboo framework’s stability.
This asymmetric dome is a masterpiece of natural materials: crisscrossed bamboo for the base, delicate strips highlighting arches, resembling leaves and branches.
Hand-picked boulders seamlessly blend with the surroundings, creating a dialogue between building and environment.
Ibuku, along with contractors and engineers, conquered the challenge of crafting a complex, organic structure that feels alive, not rigid. This bamboo haven celebrates movement, mindfulness, and nature’s beauty.

The Lumi Shala/IBUKU in Archdaily (Abdel, 2023)
Nestled in nature, a peaceful yoga space emerges, built with natural materials and innovative methods. Imagine flowing shapes inspired by the human form forming the foundation and a flower-like roof letting in sunlight for enlightened practice.
The unique structure defies convention, with its bamboo arches arranged in a special way to create a spacious, airy atmosphere. This design, similar to the Arc Gymnasium, brings light and openness to the yoga experience.
