Located in Rua Dr. Alves da Veiga (street), Porto, the Alves da Veiga project had the objective of reconverting an old printing office, built in the 19th century and abandoned for decades, into a set of six apartments, preserving the entire structure and the preexisting’s spatial concept.

Although appearing from the outside to only have two floors, the original building had in fact a very curious floor + mezzanine layout, which actually embodied four habitable levels.

In spite of its advanced state of degradation, the industrial austerity that we found on our first few visits to the building, was the starting point in defining the design proposal.

Simplicity and exactness in the spatial layout, strongly lightened spaces, marked by double-height ceilings.

The result is a set of six apartments (studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom) where the white walls and ceilings contrast with the coolness of the concrete floor on the ground floor and the warmth of the pinewood on upper levels.

In the logic of the original setting, the rooftop and ground-floor apartments allow the exploration in design of different typologies, through mezzanines and the creation of outdoor spaces, patios, and balconies.
