Museum History | Imperial War Museum

In 1920, the museum opened its doors to guests at its original location at Sydenham Hill’s Crystal Palace. In 1924, the museum moved to the Imperial Institute in South Kensington; a year later, in 1936, it finally acquired a permanent home in Southwark, which had previously been the Bethlem Royal Hospital. Before the Second World War started, the museum broadened its collections and area of study; nevertheless, following the war, the organization started to decline. The organization’s corporate headquarters, the Imperial War Museum London, is situated in Southwark and underwent renovation in the 1960s. In the 1970s, the museum began moving onto additional spaces. At what is now IWM Duxford, a historic airport in Cambridgeshire, the first one took place in 1976. In 1978, the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Belfast joined the museum after being preserved for the nation by a private charity. Public access to the Cabinet Conflict Rooms, an underground command center for wartime, began in 1984. Starting in the 1980s and ending in 2000, the museum’s Bethlem building underwent a series of multimillion-pound renovations. IWM North, the museum’s fifth facility and it’s first in the north of England opened its doors in Trafford, Greater Manchester, in 2002. In 2011, the museum’s name was changed to IWM, which stands for “Imperial War Museums.”

Architecture

The museum has a total area of 22,500 square meters and hosts 1 million visitors annually. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the commencement of World War One, the museum underwent extensive renovations unveiled in 2014. A spacious atrium at the center of the structure offers a dramatic setting for seeing the largest pieces in the museum’s collection. The Harrier jet, Spitfire, V2 rocket, and other iconic objects are hung to match the gallery displays on each of the levels, totally redefining the interaction between these exhibits and the surrounding galleries. The planes are framed by a set of massive concrete fins when seen from the higher floors. To support the aircraft, enlarged gallery floors, and barrel-vaulted roof, these fins that line the atrium spread as they climb. Vertical and horizontal visual connections are made possible by terraces between the fins, and a new gallery floor hung under the dome of the roof that protects from direct natural light exhibits. The Holocaust Exhibition, located on the third floor, chronicles the development of anti-Semitism in Europe and its peak in the concentration camps, the simple setting of Crimes Against Humanity upstairs is the backdrop for a film that explores modern ethnic and genocidal violence with the ground floor housing the First World War Galleries, which feature interior design by Casson Mann. A cantilevered stair serves as the atrium’s backdrop. Vertical circulation was created to make connections between floors more obvious. The café and store are situated on the ground floor, near the entrance. The western façade‘s ground-floor windows were opened, providing views into the museum and views of the park from the atrium. The café has seating that extends into the park, making it possible to eat outside of the Museum’s regular business hours.

Art | Imperial War Museum

The art collection of the museum consists of sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings, and works in video, photography, and sound. The collection began during World War I when the museum purchased pieces that it had both independently and through the British War Memorials Committee of the Ministry of Information commissioned. The art collection had approximately 3,000 pieces as early as 1920[106], including paintings by John Singer Sargent, Christopher Nevinson, Wyndham Lewis, and John Nash. The museum founded the Artistic Records Committee, later known as the Art Commissions Committee, in 1972 to hire artists to depict current conflicts. Additionally, there are approximately 20,000 pieces of publicity material in the collection, including postcards, proclamations, and posters from both world wars and more current posters released by anti-war organizations such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Stop the War Coalition.
