A tunnel was built through the eastern face of the rock where the road to Diamond Head Crater traverses in order to connect the inner and outer sides of the rim. This outcropping of land or head was given the name Diamond Head because some of the crystals that sailors discovered here in the 19th century were mistakenly thought to be diamonds.
