Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774, it was established as a military camp on October 22, 1777, and was given city status in 1785. Prince Grigory Potemkin established Stavropol as one of ten strongholds constructed between Azov and Mozdok at Catherine the Great’s request. He played a significant part in the establishment of the city. Don Cossacks, especially those from the Khopersky Regiment, colonized the territory around Stavropol and Georgievsk to defend the Empire’s boundaries.
