The Nikon Chronicle first refers to Tula in the year 1146. Tula was a small stronghold situated on the Principality of Ryazan’s frontier during the Middle Ages. After it was transferred to the Grand Duchy of Moscow, a brick fortification known as the Kremlin was built between 1514 and 1521. It was a crucial fortification in the Great Abatis Belt and resisted a Tatar siege in 1552. Ivan Bolotnikov and his allies took control of the fortress in 1607 after withstanding a four-month siege by the army of the Tsar. Some of the Kremlin walls were destroyed in the 18th century. Despite its antiquated exterior, the five-domed Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin was constructed as late as 1764.
