Duisburg may be interpreted as a “castle on the hill.” As a result, the phrase “site on a hill overlooking the Rhine” could be referring to the current town hall’s location. The medieval Gau (country subdivision) on the Lower Rhine was Duisburggau (Diuspurgau).
