Around 600 BC, the Celtic Insubres, who now call Insubria in northern Italy home, are thought to have established a community. The Gaulish king Ambicatus sent his nephew Bellovesus into northern Italy at the head of a party made up of various Gaulish tribes, according to the legend recorded by Livy (writing between 27 and 9 BC). Bellovesus is said to have founded the settlement in the times of the Roman monarchy, during the reign of Tarquinius Priscus. Roman historian Titus Livy claims that Tarquin ruled between 616 and 579 BC, which is the conventional record. The Romans battled the Insubres and conquered the town in 222 BC under the Roman Republic’s leadership of consul Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus. In response, the Insubres chief yielded to Rome, giving the Romans sovereignty over the town. The city may have received its Latinized name of Mediolanum from the Romans, who eventually conquered the entire region. In Gaulish, the prefix *Medio- meant “middle, centre,” and the name element -lanon is the Celtic equivalent of Latin -planum “plain,” so *Mediolanon (Latinized as Mediolanum) meant “(settlement) in the middle of the plain.”
