There are Bronze Age relics and later Scythian and Sarmatian settlers’ items. From the second through the sixth century, the location was a member of the Chernyakhov culture. About 25 miles (40 km) east of the present-day city, close to Staryi Saltiv, was the Khazar castle of Verkhneye Saltovo from the eighth to the tenth centuries. It was part of the Cuman empire’s realm in the 12th century. Resettlers escaping the turmoil that overtook Right-bank Ukraine in 1654 erected the fortification (see Khmelnytsky Uprising). The area was sparsely populated and part of the Cossack Hetmanate before that. The crowd arrived at the Lopan and Kharkiv river banks, where there was an abandoned town.
