The earliest mentions of what is now Grenoble originate from 43 BC. Cularo was a Gallic town of the Allobroges tribe near a bridge across the Isère during the time. In 286 AD, three centuries later, as instability in the late Roman empire grew, a substantial wall was built around the little town.
Emperor Gratian came to Cularo and was so moved by the people’s hospitality that he declared the town a Roman city. In 381, Cularo was renamed Gratianopolis (“city of Gratian”) in honour of this (leading to Graignovol during the Middle Ages and then Grenoble). During the fourth century, Christianity spread throughout the region, and the diocese of Grenoble was established in 377 AD. From that point forward, the bishops wielded significant political clout.
