Indigenous peoples near Aracaju on the Sao Francisco River spoke the extinct unclassified Boime language (sometimes written Poem). The area that is now Aracaju was awarded to Pero Gonçalves by the Portuguese crown in a sesmaria in 1602. The region has a shoreline of 160 kilometres (99 miles) with small fishing communities. In 1699, the hamlet of Santo Antônio de Aracaju was established. It was founded by Joo Mulato, an indigenous Brazilian, at the mouth of the Sergipe River on the Atlantic Ocean. The parish of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro do Tomar do Cotinguiba included the settlement, which grew slowly in the 18th century.
