Oviedo is the capital city of the Asturias region in northern Spain. It is known for its cider and annual fair, one of the country’s finest public art collections. The elegant city is an administrative and commercial centre of the region. The region was developed around a monastery by Fruela I in 757 AD and became the kingdom’s capital in 810 AD. The monastery still exists as a vital city cathedral. Other significant structures in the city are the Chapel built by Alfonso II, the Bishop’s Palace, the Provincial Museum and the University of Oviedo.
